Coronavirus In The Netherlands — Update 28 And 29 April 2020
Yesterday and one day before yesterday happened something or rules were clarified.
“On the 4th of May, in the Netherlands, we commemorate victims of war, and on 5 May we celebrate the fact that we live in freedom.”, says the website of the National Committee 4 and 5 May. But now that the coronavirus is prevalent, we cannot go to Dam Square in Amsterdam now, to lay the wreath and lay flowers at memorial monuments through The Netherlands. The National Committee 4 and 5 May makes it possible to send virtual flowers to the monuments. You can, particular and companies, to donate a certain amount through the app — from Dutch ABN Amro Bank, Tikkie — to the committee so they can buy the flowers later. “Flowers and commemoration are brought together in a special way,” Jan van Kooten, director of the National Committee on 4 and 5 May told ANP.
Dutch IKEA stores will be open again with strict measurements. They will decide which customers need to get in first and with whom and how many people. They will have a door policy like the grocery stores have at the moment. Also, there is a plexiglass at the cash register. They are open for the first time for six weeks.
Individual music lessons are allowed, only when the 1,5 meter is guaranteed and as long as the measurements are applied from the RIVM. that says Minister Van Engelshoven for Education, Culture, and Science. Group lessons are not allowed yet, as they are under the measurements of being together in a group which is still until the 19th of May. Music schools and associations, orchestras, and choirs cannot, therefore, rehearse or perform together. The dome for amateur music KNMO advises where it is possible. They will look when it is possible to restart individual music lessons with due observance of the rules we know now, such as keeping a distance of one and a half meters.
Minister Cora van Nieuwenhuizen wants that European countries’ guarantees for travel vouchers. These vouchers must be a compensation for the canceled flights so the travelers could go another time when the Corojnavirus pandemic is over.
Minister Fred Grapperhaus says we are from being at the moment we were before the Coronavirus crisis. He also says that Dutch people behaved very well last weekend. “We do see that people go outside more, but they mostly adhered to the hygiene rules and the one and a half meter distance. They take the rules very seriously. I am confident that this will continue.”, he says. He also says that people are more likely and more willing to see where the boundaries are. “These are the measures as they are. It is clear that we have now come a long way, but we are not there yet. It is a long process and we know it. We must continue.”
The biggest investment foundation from the government — Invest-NL — give another 100 million euros to innovative start-ups and scale-ups who hit hard by the Coronavirus crisis. This will be above the other 100 million euros which were made available from the government. Invest-NL makes the money available through the Temporary Bridging Loan Program for innovative Start-up and Scale-ups. This offers financing from 2 million euros. Entrepreneurs can count on an “accelerated investment process of 3 to 5 weeks”, the fund promises.
Dutch universities have to count on much fewer international students in the next academic year. That says the Dutch TV program Nieuwsuur. Future academic students are doubting about studying in The Netherlands as if studying in The Netherlands will be interesting enough during the Pandemic. “I will not enroll at a Dutch university this year for online courses only,” said Murali from India. Research by the Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis shows that international students earn a lot of money in the Netherlands.
In The Hague, there were people demonstrating yesterday, in front of the government building of The House of Representatives. Those people, between 100 and 200 people, believe that the government gives us fake numbers of the Coronavirus and that the 5G network has something to do with the virus. Also, they want to unlock the lockdown. And there are people who don’t want that there will be a vaccine for the virus as they will believe that a vaccine is bad for your immune system. A lot of people don’t take action to keep up the 1,5-meter distance. The police are present with this demonstration.
The government started a campaign to help people who got psychological complaints from the Coronavirus. On the radio and social media, people give practical tips and tricks. The coronavirus gives stress to a lot of people. State Secretary Blokhuis points out that this applies even more to people who already suffered from psychological complaints: “There is quite a lot coming at us and it is not surprising that people feel gloomy or tense as a result. The most important thing is to talk about it. your family, your partner, or your friends. I also want to call on people to really go to the doctor if they need help.”
RKC Waalwijk is a soccer club in The Netherlands. They got back into soccer with the measurements of the RIVM. the soccer players and staff have to keep each 1,5-meter distance, and the audience is not welcome. Earlier this week, FC Twente — another soccer club — said that the club restarts the training. Ajax and FC Utrecht are still debating on whether and when they are going to restart the training sessions. AZ probably will restart at the beginning of May.
The tennis clubs are open again, ‘but the tennis balls must be in quarantine after the training’. At least one is doing this way: KJLTC in Kampen. And they are very happy with it. They have to get used to the new way of training again, for sporters and coaches. The coaches are wearing hand gloves and all people need to take care of the 1,5-metre distance.
In the world, people are using more internet traffic. In The Netherlands, people are using the internet — between December and April — 22 percent more. Because of the Coronavirus crisis, the numbers are four times more than a quarter before.
The government asked the Outbreak Management Team (OMT) about using mouth masks. Minister Van Rijn says, there are not enough mouth masks in The Netherlands and therefore we cannot use it in other contact jobs other than health care.
State Secretary Van Veldhoven says the public transport in only for people who need to go to their job, such as health carers, people in education and other people who need to go to work, and when you are able to work from home, just to that. “During a working visit to Rotterdam, I saw that the crowds in public transport are increasing. All we can say is: don’t do that. The public transport is for people who have to work in the supermarket and the hospital, and not for people who want to cycle on weekends.” Conductors and administrators may evict people from public transport if too many have boarded. It has already happened that a train was stopped because too many people were in it. Van Veldhoven: “But that also means that the nurse who is tired after a long shift and wants to go home is also standing still. We shouldn’t want to. I understand that we all get that need, but the public transport is really not for outings.”
Amsterdam will say sorry for their part in the slave trade and slavery. In a conversation with the organization about the commemoration on the 1st of July, is decided that they will say sorry next year. to do. The National Institute for Dutch Slavery Past and Legacy (NiNsee) says, which organizes the commemoration, the measures surrounding the Coronavirus make it “not the right time” for apologies. The commemoration will take place on July 1 this year but in an adapted form. Mayor Halsema and the National Slavery Past Platform will lay wreaths in Oosterpark in a short ceremony.
Prime Minister went to the garbage center and Minister Blok of Foreign Affairs went to the alarm center to know what the effect of Coronavirus has on these sectors. These sectors are one of the most important sectors which need to work right now. Rutte visited the waste processing of the Hague Environmental Service. It is extra busy there. People offer a lot of waste and come to the environmental street en masse because they have started cleaning, growing, or gardening. “Our gardens are completely in order after this crisis,” the prime minister joked. He called on people not all to come to the environmental street at the same time. “And don’t make it an outing.” Minister Blok went to the ANWB, where he spoke with representatives of the various emergency centers. They are busy repatriating Dutch people who are stuck abroad because of the crisis. Initially, 25,000 people wanted to return. At the moment it is still about 7000 Dutch people. Most are stuck in Morocco, which keeps borders closed. Last weekend, an airplane departed exceptionally from Morocco to the Netherlands. Blok cannot say when the rest can come home.
There is a map in Dutch which says what kind of Coronavirus there are at the moment in which countries. In a lot of countries, measurements will be relaxed, but on the map, you can see where there are rules (in Dutch).
The Vuelta won’t be in The Netherlands this year as — in the new timeslot — accommodations and course not available anymore. Dutch organization gave back the start in The Netherlands and they are trying to get it for 2022.
Next week, there will be a decision about visiting nursing homes for the elderly. The government is still working on an adapted visitor arrangement. This will be seen by the OMT first. Minister De Jonge: “But whatever comes out, we will introduce it cautiously and step by step. We will, for example, first try it out in a specific region or area. We must be very careful with the people in nursing home care.”
Prime Minister Rutte says the hotels are not meant as dinner location. Hotels are open for their visitors when they have to: “The hotels are intended for when people really have to spend the night there and therefore cannot cook at home. Then the hotel guests can eat there.”, says Rutte. Some people will take advantage of this and this is no reason for the ministers to open restaurants other than the hotel restaurants: “If Hugo and I were to close each loophole, we would be running a children’s playground. I think we should all keep thinking a bit.”
