Coronavirus Found in Ice Cream — Can it Be Contracted this Way?

At least 390 of 29,000 cartons in the batch had been sold

It’s been reported that ice cream distributed by a food company near Beijing was found to have been contaminated with coronavirus.

That’s the bad news.

The good news is most of the batch of 29,000 cartons had not been put out for sale yet — supposedly. And, the cartons that had been sold were being recalled.

The Chinese government is saying that ingredients used to make the ice cream came from the Ukraine. So, who knows where the ice cream was exposed.

So how did they even detect this?

Did they just randomly test the ice cream? Something seems to be missing from this scenario.

Can People Become Infected from Eating the Ice Cream?

Good question. I did some digging to try and find out.

Scientifically speaking, the WHO states there’s no evidence that eating ice cream can spread coronavirus.

Harvard Medical School says that the possibility of contracting or transmitting coronavirus through food CANNOT BE RULED OUT, but states that cooking would likely kill the virus, so hot foods are likely safer. But uncooked foods like sandwiches and salads may be a different story.

Scientists point out that no reported transmission of COVID-19 has been through eating food, but scientific literature is constantly being monitored for new information.

So, in other words — they don’t know if somebody can catch the virus from eating the ice cream.

Discussion

My thoughts about this are whether coronavirus can survive on food that’s been frozen. But, if you really think about it, there’s probably coronavirus on food everywhere, along with a host of other undesirable stuff landing on it before we eat it.

The immune system is truly amazing, is all I can say.
