Coping with Grief: Understanding the Emotions of Loss.
Navigating the Painful Process of Healing After Losing a Loved One
The loss of a loved one:
Three long years have passed since Tessa lost the love of her life. Every day, she looks back at the beautiful memories and feels saddened by her loss.
She regularly attends Sunday services and joins us at bible study but rarely engages in conversation. When she does speak, she only talks about “if only Josef were here” — her late husband.
We have noticed that she has been wearing the same outfit every Sunday, which seems to be the one she wore three years ago at the funeral. It appears she is not paying much attention to her grooming lately.
Something is amiss. We talked with Lottie Ellison, our group leader, to find something we could do to help Tessa beat the blues.
Lottie asked Tessa if we could lay hands on her during the opening prayer, and Tessa agreed.
Before the Scripture reading, Lottie holds Tessa’s hand and tells her we have all noticed that she is still mourning Josef and has every right to do this.
Then Lottie addresses all of us, (but the message is for Tessa.)
She says,
“People believe that losing the one they value most is the most painful thing in life.
The truth is the most painful thing is losing yourself in the process of valuing someone too much and forgetting that you are special too!
We are here to support you, Tessa. We encourage you to share memories of Josef with us, and we will visit when you’re ready.”
Tessa was moved to tears by the group’s kindness and expressed her gratitude. We offered support and shared our phone numbers, giving her warm hugs and encouraging her to reach out whenever needed.
We believe Lottie’s words affected Tessa, as her demeanor was more relaxed, and she smiled as she said goodbye.
