Coping In Today’s Business World As A Young Professional

Navigating the uncertainty

I was fairly ‘new’ in the corporate world. This time was different even though I had worked before. Looking back to it now, I was traversing new terrains with extreme conditions in my professional life. My perception of work life was going through radical change due to the experience I was having.

My environment was in a constant state of evolution at lightning speeds. I couldn’t keep up.

And for a decent amount of time, my mind was trying to comprehend the impact of the transition from my previous, more relaxed roles, to the one I had just entered. It was almost as going through shocks trying to adjust to the new situation, only for it to change again and again.

It felt like every 1 step forward was equivalent to 2 steps backwards.

But I kept pushing. The mindset was set. I put my head down and convinced myself the only acceptable scenario of this ending is with me emerging victorious. No room for failure.

This was my experience at the early stages of my career when I was thrown into the ocean. I was either going to swim, or drown.

The question is, how do you not drown?

Staying afloat

In today’s world, the above scenario is not uncommon. More and more people — especially young professionals — are experiencing stressful working conditions where things are constantly shifting.

The advent of the digital era along with the advancement of technology has made everything accessible in an instant — everything moves rapidly. And if you are even the slightest slow, you will fall behind.

Hence why certain types of businesses that didn’t exist before — such as digital agencies, web agencies, and tech start-ups — need to follow suit. Priorities, business needs, and client requirements are liquid.

But how can you cope with all of this?

Initiative and proactivity

Start with taking initiative and being proactive with your actions. You can identify the changing elements in your business and attempt to anticipate what may change next.

There’s a good chance certain projects and/or clients will be the usual suspects. Write these down. Next time you are engaged with them, you can attempt to predict what will happen next and act on that.

Same thing can apply if you are reporting to a manager. You can manage their expectations by being proactive.

Ownership and responsibility

Owning and having responsibility over your actions is another important step. Having ownership means you care about the tasks you are responsible for, and then some. You go the extra mile.

It’s how you build credibility and trustworthiness among your fellow colleagues, as well as with your boss. Even if you do some mistakes, integrity will leave a much more lasting impact than the mishaps.

Ownership is the path to put yourself in a position where you gain control of the situation 1% more than yesterday.

Being the best version of yourself

Conscious effort plays a big part in your self development — and subsequently into being effective. You must actively try your best and always keep pushing a little bit past your limits than the day before.

Do your absolute best within the power of your capabilities to deliver your work and leave no room for error.

If you are tasked to make some copies using the copy machine, make sure they are the best copies you’ve ever made. If you are meant to do a presentation, then make a killer presentation. Ace it.

It’s the mentality that counts.

Put some faith into the being that is You

Relentlessly believe in yourself. It sounds cliché I know.

But the reality is, you are your biggest fan. And if you are not, you should become. Keep pushing and learn from your mistakes. Use them as your stepping stones and lessons learned, rather than failures.

Don’t let those mistakes affect you in a negative way, and don’t let other peoples’ opinions bring you down.

After all, what people think about you is a perception, not a fact.

Recharge

And last but not least, actually take the time to recharge yourself. As obvious as it sounds, we constantly neglect this. Numerous studies indicate how important it is for our well being to spend the necessary time to rest and relax.

Take care of the vehicle that carries you through your day.

All in all

Understandably, there will be limitations within your contexts in terms of what you can and what you can’t do. That shouldn’t stop you from pursuing to attempt the above to the max of your abilities.

After all, each amount of effort you put into these will accumulate up to a point where it will be visible that a huge amount of progress has been made. That will be your cue when you’ve grown as a person.
