Cooperation and not competition is the Key to Success
Changing the human paradigm
Modern biology has punctured holes in Darwin’s theory of evolution and believes that the evolution theory propagated by the French biologist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, almost a decade before Darwin is probably a more accurate view of evolution occurred.
Unlike Darwin, who viewed evolution as a battle between species, Lamarck conceptualized evolution as cooperation between species and suggested that species evolve as they learn to fit their surroundings. Multicellular organisms developed because single-celled organisms eventually realized that instead of competing for scarce resources, they could depend on each other and survive better. Symbiotic relationships, where different organisms cooperate for mutual gain is commonly seen, e.g., Oxpecker birds gain a safe habitat on rhinoceros’ backs and, in exchange, eat parasites and insects that would harm rhinos. Another example is our bodies; we have hundreds or even thousands of species of symbiotic microbes inside us; without their beneficial effects, we couldn’t survive.
Bruce H. Lipton, a stem cell biologist and an internationally acclaimed leader in bridging science and spirit, in his book — The biology of belief, says,
‘Cooperation rather than competition should be the central tenet in our theory of evolution.’
This is not just a huge shift in our understanding of evolution, but also a massive shift in the philosophy of life that humanity believes in!
We have all grown up learning Darwin’s ‘Survival of the fittest.’ This philosophy forces humanity to look at resources from the perspective of scarcity. We start competing as kids; we compete for grades, we compete for jobs, we compete for attention, everything! We constantly compare ourselves to others. While our wins give us a momentary high, no one can keep winning, which leads to unnecessary stress and suffering in life.
Constant competition builds stress in life. Stress triggers the Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS), which is responsible for ‘Protection,’ which we also call ‘Flight or fight mode.’ The body’s physical stress response is essential for ‘survival’ and grants an energizing boost of mental focus to overcome the threat or stress. For example, when we come face-to-face with a lion, our body will either prepare to confront the animal or flee from it. This part of our Automatic nervous system (ANS) is stronger because of our frequent exposure to external threats throughout the evolutionary process. If prolonged, however, it is hugely detrimental to our health and overall growth.
Growth and development happen when the Parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) is triggered. This happens when we are at ease, free from any stress or pressure when we are inspired and motivated, and pursuing a higher purpose, not when we are competing and comparing and trying to come first!! The Parasympathetic Nervous system is essential for ‘growth’ and ‘creativity.’
As modern biology makes this shift from Darwin to Lamarck’s theory, can humanity also make a paradigm shift and adopt the philosophy of cooperation and collaboration instead of competition?
Can we shift our paradigm to abundance rather than scarcity?
If we as a race are able to do this, we will unlock the key to our evolution to the next stage, a race of much more creative and intelligent beings who work together towards a common good.
