Content mills are dying — Or are they?

Exhale..this is a tough one.

Content mills.

They can be a steady source of income for writers but, at what cost?

Half your normal rate?

A fifth of your regular rate?

And, is it worth it?

Sacrificing your rate to get the job

When I first started writing, one of the tactics I’d use to appeal to prospective clients is negotiating my rate.

My thought was, getting that client, even at a discount was better than not getting them at all.

It was a selling strategy that worked most of the time until I started getting taken advantage of so today, I rarely negotiate and I really try to stick to my rate.

It’s about knowing your worth, you know.

For example, when you start booking 50,000 words per month of content for one or multiple clients, it sounds like a dream for a new writer.

At a standard rate of $0.10/word, one client at 50K words for the month would earn you $5,000!

Two clients at that package, $10,000!

You only need that one or two clients to make a full-time income and you’re set!

But when you start negotiating down to $0.04/word or $0.02/word, for me it feels like you’ll doing up to 5X the work for the money.

It’s true to a degree.

I wasn’t feeling this way at the time though.

My experience with content mills

So, back to content mills.

What do you really think about them?

Are content mills dying?

A lot of writers say content mills are dying. But, I see more and more popping up on the internet.

Seasoned writers try to steer newbies away from those sites for low pay but, if you’re getting work consistently at the lower rate versus not getting booked at your regular rate, are content mills really all that bad?

It’s a debate for sure.

Considering all things, I don’t think content mills are going away. I think they’re flourishing and here to stay.

They help clients with their content needs. They provide steady work for freelance writers and the content mill can make good income as well.

It seems like a win-win for everyone involved.

I think depending on the site, they can be a good option to fill in your slow times.

I wouldn’t recommend using them for the bulk of your income, as the pay can be incredibly low and you’ll be competing against a lot of other writers.

Not to mention the stress.

When I used to write for a content mill back in the day, it was super stressful. I’d set my alarm to 5am to try to get the new work for the day and sometimes still wouldn’t be able to snatch up assignments.

But, all sites don’t work like this and your experience can really vary from platform to platform.

Have you ever worked for a content mill? Do you think they’re dying or here to stay?
