Content Code Finally Cracked by BADASS

Reflecting insights from “The Content Code” by Mark W. Schaefer

As an author, knowledge curator, and content disseminator in digital transformation engagements, I read many books, articles, blogs, industry magazines, and scientific publications. They all provided useful insights and helped me to communicate my message effectively. However, my knowledge and understanding of content marketing was challenged, my believes were shattered, and I finally saw the light at the end of the tunnel with a click sound.

This post is about the last book I read and listen to relating content creation, management, and marketing which made me rethink, re-architect, and refine my content strategy, information dissemination, and knowledge curation goals in my personal and professional digital life. Therefore, I decided to write an article about it and share it with this community who may benefit of the insights in this valuable book.

Let me introduce “The Content Code” written by Mark W. Schaefer. I want to share the rationale behind my conviction for the special value of this book and share my takeaways without spoiling the book for you.

My point of view for takeaways is not only at an individual level but also at the organisational level content management and marketing.

First of all, the book reinforced my understanding of social media marketing from a compelling business value perspective. The book highlights the true value of social media marketing and the critical steps that individual contributors and business organisations need to enable to achieve measurable results.

Without spoiling the content of the book, let me share my top 10 takeaways:

Photo by Juan Gomez on Unsplash

1. I learnt the psychological reasons for sharing or not sharing content.

2. I found the 22 tips to improve content practical and useful.

3. I learnt how to set my strategies using the cleverly named “BADASS” formula which helped me crack my own content code.

· Brand Development

· Audience and Influencers

· Distribution, Advertising, Promotion, and SEO

· Authority

· Shareability

· Social Proof and Social Signals

4. My tenuous understanding of the buzz around SEO hacks being not everything in content dissemination was validated. Instead of wasting time on cheating google, we can focus our energies on developing high quality and unique content, which truly matters.

5. I learnt how to build an “Alpha Audience” and nurture them.

6. I gained insights into the future of content ignition.

7. I better understood the magic behind Twitter.

8. I learnt to better appreciate my Linkedin followers.

9. I learnt the differences between three kinds of [HHH] content:

Hygiene content

Hub content

Hero content

10. Last but not least, I learnt how to achieve measurable results.

There are of course more insightful content in this 260 pages of a reasonable size book. You may find different valuable points for your domain. I’d love to know your takeaways if you read this book.

By the way, I also enjoyed listening to Mark’s own reassuring and pleasant voice in audible format when I was driving by myself from Melbourne to Canberra for eight hours which made me forget my coffee breaks.

Let us know your insights on how you cracked your content code!

You can read my content in various publications on Medium such as Age of Awareness, The Startup, Data Driven Investor, IoT Magazine, Data Series, aFew Words. You may also check my two publications Technical Excellence and Transhumanism.
