Consume And Combine Playfully
How To Keep The Creative Juices Flowing
Creativity is not limited to certain rare individuals. Perhaps it is a myth to consider that it is only available for a special class of people. No one is excluded, everyone has the right to exercise their creativity. As a matter of fact, everyone born is naturally creative in their own unique ways.
While it can be true that some of us might not have gotten a chance to exercise or test out our creative potentials in a safe environment during childhood. Maybe we were not supported or it could be that we were beaten down to conform to the standards already set by society, the schooling system, etc. We might have been burdened with a lot of limiting beliefs and fears stacked upon our creative potentials.
But as adults, if we have the possibility then we can use the chance to uncover those natural creative potentials within us even if it is not bursting out of us uncontrollably like famous artists initially. We can accept our burdened limiting beliefs and give it a shot anyway, so to speak.
Consuming Creative Works
Perhaps, what we need to look for is a way to trigger the creative potentials within us. Maybe we can recall moments when we enjoyed a great movie or a beautiful song that not only gave us good entertainment but also provided an inspiration to create something like that. We might have even tried to imitate a dance movement etc.
We do not need more motivational stuff to endure and do more, but we can instead expose ourselves to the creative works of others who did their work in joy rather than dull endurance. Sometimes if you are a fiction writer, then exposing yourself to works of photography or paintings, etc could trigger something unique in you, and vice versa. Creatives can be mutually inspiring. There is a kind of frequency catch up within us that could happen when exposing ourselves to works of joy.
Consuming creative works of others can trigger or inspire within us a creative spark. It is a good starting point to expose ourselves to such creative works. It can be movies, designs, photos, paintings, books, music, etc. But the important thing is we do not stop there but use such inspiring moments to come up with something through ourselves.
Combining Ideas
There is this creativity trigger that can happen through combination. It is the art of combining various inspiring ideas to generate a new one. It is not blind copying of an idea to get approval. But to be truthful to the creative inspiration that arose within us when exposed to old ideas or maybe works of others and engage in a process of combining those and testing it out to come up with something new. The key is to make it joyful for us and not to seek approval.
The good thing about this combining process is that when we are engaged in brainstorming existing ideas or inspiring ideas and mixing them to come up with something new, then this inevitably forces the creative juices within our brain to flow and in this flow, we have the chances of coming up with something new that was never before, a true spark, a stunning idea, etc. It is like a cross-pollination of ideas to breed new varieties.
Cross-pollination is when one plant pollinates a plant of another variety. The two plants’ genetic material combines and the resulting seeds from that pollination will have characteristics of both varieties and is a new variety.
Here we are intentionally cross-pollinating ideas.
The idea is similar to combining primary colors (Red, Green, Blue) to form varieties of secondary colors.
The important and the tough part is to ger our creative juices to flow. And if we are waiting for an idea to strike upon us so as to begin, we would be lost in frustration and hopelessness and also triggers limiting beliefs which will further suck up our creative juices. To get to the point where our creative mind opens up with curiosity and interest is the hardest job. And this is where the art of combination in a curiosity-driven mindset can be helpful.
While consuming could be an act of focused reading or learning, etc combining could be seen as an act of de-focusing where you allow your mind to form new connections from what you had already consumed. Any creative work would require a balance of focus and de-focus. It is a skill one learns through repetition and showing up.
Trap Of Originality
There is this trap of originality. Stubbornly waiting for original ideas to strike can make the creative endeavor a dull process compared to using existing inspiring ideas already planted on our brain at some point (inspiring for you, not generalizing) and playing with it. There are more chances for creative juices to flow in the former case. And once the creative mind is ignited then it can take us anywhere. It is only a matter of recalling such moments and noting them down and playing with it.
Eliminating the need to be original and entertaining a playful mindset can do wonders to initiate the flow of creative juices. And perhaps getting into the creative zone playfully can be challenging. Because we tend to get serious and tense up while sitting down to create something. And this seriousness can be damaging as far as creativity is concerned. It can be useful to enter into a creative process in a lighthearted way, and not in a do or die spirit. When the mind is not pressured, then one has more chance to open up the creative mind. Playing with ideas consumed throughout the day as a beginning point to enter into the creative process without even letting yourself know what might happen can be so freeing in that case and fresh ideas emerge in that playfulness.
