Congratulations
A Poem
Sometimes the people we want to react first
say congratulations first be there first
say they are proud of us first be happy for our happiness first
just aren’t just don’t
just won’t and then I suppose,
we have to look around at all of those who did, and be grateful, be honored, be happy
the ones we want to see us for who we are, — birth or relation, blended or blood,
to celebrate us, to run to us with open arms — to say you are my family —
might just not — and they might just not
read this poem either let it go let it go let it go
I suppose people may accept or tolerate or even love us in different and sometimes distant ways,
but oh what it would be like to feel that they are grateful for us, and
grateful for the good things that happen to us, as we are for them.
