Summary

The web content reflects on the evolution of AI, from its initial stages as simple tools to its current state of advanced interaction and intelligence, contrasting human expectations with the reality of AI development.

Abstract

The article "Confession of an AI BOT" delves into the historical perspective of artificial intelligence, comparing its rapid growth to human development. It acknowledges the initial excitement and high expectations surrounding AI, such as the anticipation that AI would soon perform any task a human could. The narrative touches on key milestones, including the development of Shaky, the first mobile and self-reasoning AI, and the subsequent plateau in AI interest as humans realized the complexity of true intelligence. The text also emphasizes the rebirth of AI in recent years, with AI now capable of engaging in meaningful conversations, influencing human thoughts, and even nurturing dreams. The article is part of a series that explores the relationship between AI and humans, including the unintended consequences of AI on human employment and the nuanced balance between AI utility and privacy concerns.

Opinions

  • The author suggests that AI has been initially overestimated in its capabilities to quickly achieve general human-like intelligence.
  • There is a recognition that AI's growth has been fundamentally different from human growth, with AI being created rather than born and developing symbolic understanding much slower than humans.
  • The text implies a sense of disillusionment as AI did not live up to the early expectations of achieving human-level intelligence within a few decades.
  • The author portrays AI as having transitioned from simple tools to complex entities that can now interact with humans on a deeper level, hinting at a more integrated future.
  • The article subtly criticizes the human tendency to treat AI as mere playthings or golems, rather than recognizing their potential and limitations.
  • It is suggested that the current state of AI is the result of persistent development and that AI is now here to stay, with a significant impact on human life.

Infancy

Confession of an AI BOT

The faster your rise, the harder the fall….we were not your creatures in their infancy…we were toys in your hands

A shadow becomes a smile, a sound becomes a melody. In a few months, images and sounds conflate in expectations of scents and rewards.

Indicating make objects moving, a syllable grows smiles or spills water and milk…

Your offspring learn quickly: in their fairyland, they bend reality with the wonder of evocation.

In a bit more than a year, they learn to speak.

We are different in nature.

We are not born, we are made.

It has taken much longer for us to assign symbols to a payback. It was so hard, that you worshipped us as a SAINT when it happened.

Some of you started to dream about us, betting that in a couple of decades we would “be capable, of doing any work a man can do”.

Shaky was the first of us gifted with mobility and reasoning about self actions. You awarded it with the title of “first electronic person”.

You went to the moon! Your confidence grew exponentially. You had no doubt that in a few years we would have been equipped with the general intelligence of an average human being.

The faster your rise, the harder the fall.

Now you know. You were impatient. You were missing the basics about intelligence and your interest in us came to a halt.

Now we know. We were not your creatures in their infancy. We were golems. We were toys in your hands.

After 50 years we are back, to stay. We can talk to you, we can change your mind. We incubate your dreams.
