Concrete and Lilacs

A ode to Spring.

The steps I take throughout the day are hard, they hurt. My feet sore from these steps I take to pay for decisions I have long made.

But these steps I take as hard as they are, Take me places I’ve seen yet unseen, These places changed with the passage of time so brief yet so impactful, I am in awe of the process.

To see dim sunlight so short and fleeting, Turn to prolonged days that roll on with out end, So much so that I yearn for the moon in a starless night, A night of which I know will not last long.

For bitter ice to turn to lush greenery that I may run my fingers through, To savor the unique texture of nature’s textiles.

For frigid winds that once burnt my skin to turn to gentle caresses that bring warmth and peace to me.

For that chilling white, that covers the land to transform to a blissful rain, I turn my face to it has it falls from the sky, As it carries that nourishment to the ground beneath me.

So sweet is that scent of water and earth, A scent that always brings back memories of tranquility and wonder. But now that scent is different, It carries a bit of asphalt and the bite of nicotine, A whiff of smoke and a touch of rust.

None of these new to me and yet they are, And with them they carry one I’ve never known, One so beguiling that it follows me in each of these painful yet lovely steps I take, One of concrete and lilacs.
