Compost is not the best place for lemon peels.

The healthy Gardner wants healthy soil and good healthy compost is the solution for nutrient-rich soil & produce. There are compost experts out there that will offer great instructions on how to create the best compost pile for your garden.
Those are the experts worth granting attention to when wanting a perfectly professioned compost for your garden soil. The chance is large that they would know the effects of the Alpha Hydroxyl Acid in the lemon peel on the soil, probably, right?
For the professional herbalist and also the countertop supply of delicious medicine at the homestead…
lemon peels have a far greater value than compost material!

Medicinal tea can be a challenge to create. Medicine tastes like medicine no matter the honey added. Adding honey and lemon is a common helpful practice used when trying to “help the medicine go down”.
Let’s ponder a minute. Why honey & lemon? Why not chocolate syrup and whip cream? You know the answer already and the minute is not even up yet! Healthy Healing is what one seeks when drinking medicinal tea.
Lemons and honey have antibacterial properties. It’s brilliant to add these delicious healthy ingredients to your favorite medicinal tea. Fresh lemon and honey. So what about the peels? Why not the compost?

Dried lemon peels included in your favorite medicinal tea recipe can be the healthy flavorful boost the mixture needs. The nutrients in the peels are a nice addition when wanting to heal a health issue.
Vitamin C is one of the many health benefits added to a medicinal tea recipe if the lemon peels are included. Rose hips are another additive used along with lemon peels in all my signature teas.
Rosehips and other additives can be looked at on another page later. For now, the lemon peels need to be saved from the compost pile. The work involved with lemon peels may sound a bit much. Rest assured it is not the work of compost mixing and moving.

The garden work is on break for a moment and you’re drinking that delicious refreshing lemonade to restore yourself for more of whatever else later. Let the “whatever else” be — slicing up those lemon peels for drying!
The task of drying lemon peels can be super simple. Kind of like the simple little yellow fruit that it is. Slice them. Chop them. Get them into tiny pieces to place on a paper towel. Overnight, sometimes two is all it takes to have them dry enough to place into storage jars.

A larger process can be done if a dehydrator is available or maybe already in use in your kitchen. Dry them with the garden peas and make a nice big production of it for winter storage.
Slicing and chopping are still all that needs to be done with those peels. Dry them completely to prevent molding in storage. There should be a quick snap to the peel when it’s fully dry.
