Commotion on Abortion
A poem reacting to changing abortion laws in the U.S.
She says it’s her choice, they say she’s a womb. She uses her voice, they hand her a broom.
What about my life? she asks in dismay. “A mom and a wife, just live it that way.”
She needs to escape. They ask, who’s the dad? She replies it was rape. They sigh, that’s too bad.
She fears: “he will beat us!” They claim she’s too riled. She says it’s a fetus, they say it’s a child.
I can’t support it, she shares with a tear. Adoption’s an option they soothe, have no fear.
She claims she has rights. Some grin: “Supreme Court!” She fights for her life, they fight it as sport.
The life in her body: is it baby or she? Which of the living have the right to live free?
This poem was inspired by a weekly prompt (April 30 — May 6) from Promptly Written: “It’s easy to believe when you have no choice.” Thank you for the prompt, Christine Graves. It got me thinking.
