ADHD/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders affecting approximately 5–10% of the population. Although ADHD can happen to anyone, it is often thought to be more common among boys.
However, some believe this may not be true since girls with ADHD often have the inattentive subtype, which presents with less obvious symptoms and disruptive behavior than the hyperactive/impulsive subtype of ADHD. In addition, girls with ADHD are more likely to internalize their symptoms and challenges.
Unfortunately, this means that females with ADHD are more likely to be overlooked and fly under the radar when it comes to getting diagnosed and receiving the proper support. Listed below are ADHD symptoms most commonly seen in girls/women.
Disorganization
A common symptom of ADHD is having trouble staying organized. For example, You may have a messy workspace or frequently lose or forget items.
Inattention
You may have trouble paying attention during a conversation or lecture and frequently “zone out” or lose your train of thought. You may also have difficulty remembering instructions.
Emotional Dysregulation
People with ADHD often feel emotions more intensely than others. For example, when you are happy, you feel euphoric; when you are frustrated, you may have an outburst of anger. You also may have commonly been told by others that you are too sensitive or dramatic.
Executive Dysfunction
Challenges with executive functioning are prevalent in those with ADHD and include difficulties with time management, multitasking, planning and prioritizing tasks, budgeting, and other symptoms as well.
Difficulty Making & Sustaining Friends
People with ADHD often have difficulty making and keeping friends and may struggle with reading social cues and relating to others.
Masking
Women with ADHD are often better at “masking” or hiding their challenges, which can have many adverse effects on mental health, such as mental fatigue, anxiety, loneliness, and depression.
Hormonal Influence
If you have ADHD, you may notice that your symptoms seem to be worse during your menstrual cycle.
Low Self Esteem
Feelings of worthlessness and low self-esteem are extremely common in women with ADHD and may look like perfectionism, social isolation, anxiety, depression, and sensitivity to rejection, also known as rejection-sensitive dysphoria.
