SNL’s New Season Brings Bowen Yang & A Little Comedic Justice

NYU Local

Now Isn’t That Special?

Congratulations & Kudos to Bowen Yang on his promotion from the SNL writer’s room to the stage!

Do you know Bowen Yang? You should! Saturday Night Live added him to Season 45’s lineup with two other comedians Chloe Fineman and Shane Gillis (not pictured below). Bowen is a hilarious comedian, staff writer for SNL, NYU graduate and also happens to be Chinese American and openly gay. That’s the good news, but here’s where it gets interesting….

According to a Huffington Post article, Gillis who describes his comedy as, “nice racism, good racism” was fired days after SNL announced the three new cast members. Citing The Vulture, Gillis and his podcast cohost went on a racist, homophobic rant, and mocked people with mental illness.

“This rant was part of his “hierarchy of stand-up comedy” based on race, gender and sexual orientation.”

I would go on, but the writers at The Vulture and Huffington Post did an outstanding job chronicling Gillis’ racist and hateful history in the name of comedy.

This is a shame. The buzz should be on Bowen’s debut, but his spotlight is being dimmed by Gillis’ shameful firing — which was totally avoidable. He shouldn’t have been hired in the first place.

While I feel SNL should get some credit for Gillis’s swift termination, his hiring demonstrates a major flaw in their vetting process and target demographic. Was hiring a racist REALLY a good strategy to get more “conservative viewers” or was this a mistake or publicity stunt? I don’t know..

Justice was served (even if it was implicit) and Bowen adds a fresh new layer of diversity to SNL’s comedy rainbow. Let that glow and giggles begin!

I’m excited!

One comedic cougarish note -

Shoutouts to Marina Fang and Megh Wright
