A few summers ago, I was visiting my then-boyfriend in the French countryside. We had a thorny relationship and after a singularly sharp spat, I had spent a couple of hours looking for an immediate (and affordable) flight back to the U.S, with no luck.

I sat glumly and watched the night fall, sinking into a gnarly funk, seething at this bluest of nights, with the plum silhouette of the house across the street glaring at me, wondering what the hell I was doing there, when of a sudden, an armada of miniature Tinkerbelles appeared in my window. As this exuberant and disorderly pageant of electric golden fairies burst through, I instantly felt infused with joy and wonder, lifted up and out of my murk, reminded once again how exquisitely beautiful life is when you just open your eyes.

Such an invitation it was: Come fly with us! Have fun! Be free! The signs were everywhere — all I had to do was look around and follow directions.

I had only seen fireflies once before, and I was riveted and enthralled by this spectacle, which I never again saw, no matter how fervently I wished for it.
