the greenhouse gases, the melting ice climate change, changing times here for my coffee — THANKS BUT NO THANKS!!

Thank you to Lucy Dan 蛋小姐 (she/her/她) for the prompts: write a poem that is 140 characters or less + what gives you energy in the morning?when I saw Lucy’s prompts, I knew it was going to be about coffee. As I sat pondering on the prompts, I remembered a recent article I had read about the potential threats to morning routines, namely the threat that climate change poses to the coffee crops around the world.

Briefly, climate scientists predict that up to 60 percent of the land used for coffee production becomes unsuitable for farming by 2050. The United States alone imports more than the US $6 billion worth of coffee each year and mainly from South America — one of the most vulnerable areas to climate change negative impacts. If we don’t start acting to mitigate, or, in some cases, acknowledge climate change, it may soon be time to bid farewell to our coffee habits. There are some who have offered cocoa as a more climate-resilient crop as an alternative to coffee plants as coffee production declines — but think about it — I like hot chocolate just fine but replacing my morning coffee — Thanks but no thanks!!

Thank you for reading and hope you enjoy your morning coffee!
