Coffee — Necessary for Travel
Chicago Airport Coffee Experience
By Dr. Gabriella Kőrösi
It was late. It was also early. According to Oregon time, which was our original destination, it was pretty late since we had been flying an overnight flight and it was about 530 am in Chicago time. At this point, I had not slept for about a day.
Getting off the plane the first thought was: COFFEE.
I need to find some. I have been trying not to drink too much coffee, but after not sleeping a day, I needed to find some before getting to the next flight. By the time we get off the plane and start to search for a coffee place, it is close to 6 am. Thank goodness because at this point everything is closed.
Our search began for a coffee place. Did not see anything open anywhere. We found where our next flight is going to be, then search for coffee. Something has to be open right? All these people…I am sure they want coffee as well.
Everything was closed. We were dragging ourselves across the airport. Finally, I saw an airport employee and asked her if there is any coffee place open. She told us that there is one around the corner that should open shortly.
We got there just in time. There were a few people in front of us. Maybe three or four people. My drink of choice that morning was caramel macchiato. As we sat down the line was getting longer and longer. I was glad we got there when we did.
Sipping coffee, charging up the phone, and watching people. There was one guy who got impatient with the line and left before getting his coffee. There was a mom with her daughter who wanted breakfast sandwiches, but the coffee shop was out. No breakfast sandwiches this morning. If I recall they were also out of chocolate for mochas. probably the pandemic.
Changed seats at one point to be able to charge my phone. There was a breakfast place that also opened up that I could see from the coffee shop. You would think they were selling gold there. I got curious because of the long line. No. No gold, just regular breakfast. Eggs, bacon, different types of potatoes, grits, and some other stuff I don’t remember now. Was nothing I needed before another flight.
People coming and going, having conversations. Some with travels bags, some without. Some looked tired, some looked annoyed some looked cheerful. One connection this morning was that we all got our coffee at the same place.
It is kind of an interesting experience when I am sitting already having my coffee at a table next to the coffee shop where people can see me who are still in line. I am looking at the people in the line and they are looking at me.
It is almost like I can read their minds. I feel the vibration from the looks:
She got her coffee…look at that…how much longer until I can get my coffee.
What kind of coffee should I get?
Did I just hear that they are out of breakfast sandwiches? What am I going to eat?
Well, maybe I will get that whipped cream on top after all.
Well, maybe you should…..
