Summary

An educator reflects on their daily life, which is filled with the antics of various birds, a longing for the beach, and the task of marking student essays, all while humorously dealing with a butcher who misunderstands their purchase of pet mince.

Abstract

The author, amidst a cold and rainy day, finds solace in reminiscing about the beach while navigating the quirky interactions with the local wildlife, including a magpie named Magles, kookaburras, a cockatoo, crows, and a yapping dog. The narrative weaves through the author's unique bond with these creatures, particularly their shared understanding with Magles over coffee and mince, and the amusing misconception of the butcher regarding the mince's intended consumer. Amidst these distractions, the author must attend to the virtual pile of online student essays that require marking, all the while wishing for the tranquility of the beach.

Opinions

  • The author seems to have a fondness for birds, especially Magles the magpie, appreciating their company and individual personalities.
  • There is a sense of humor and patience in dealing with the birds' demands, particularly the kookaburras' specific dietary preferences and the butcher's skepticism.
  • The author finds the beach to be a preferable alternative to their current situation, indicating a longing for relaxation and escape from the daily routine.
  • The task of marking essays is presented as a bothersome obligation, albeit one that is humorously interrupted by the magpie's antics.
  • The author appears to be retired, yet still engaged in some form of educational role, as suggested by the marking of research essays.
  • There is a hint of exasperation with the butcher's assumption about who is consuming the pet mince, yet the author seems amused by the misunderstanding.
  • The overall tone suggests a contented acceptance of the author's peculiar circumstances, coupled with a touch of whimsy and a desire for the serenity of the beach.

Coffee Day-Dreams.

Cold and Rainy, Pile of Marking, Thinking of Beach.

Much prefer thinking of times at beach. Picture by John Rose.

Sharing mince with magpie putting it nicely, Got up to make coffee Magles helped himself, He and I have understanding he does what he wants I pretend not to notice.

On my land in the ‘90’s used to raise kookaburras, Original pair adopted me used to feed them pet mince, Kookaburras sound happy but definitely no-nonsense “Do it my way” type of bird, Magles has wonderful manners compared to kookaburras, Now two kookaburras come to lunch when it suits them, Hand feed them only eat raw gooey pet mince, Difficult getting pets to mince so buy it from butcher, Annoying butcher thinks I eat it because I’m old and retired, Tell him kookaburra eats it, Know he doesn’t believe me, Magles thinks it’s funny.

Thinking of beach better than thinking about annoying butchers, Screecher just landed big white sulphur crested cockatoo, Stomping around as usual better get him favourite sunflower seed, Where a glove strong claws scratch, Magpie in kitchen learning to cook mince, Wish I was at beach.

Downstairs yapper won’t come on his veranda, Yesterday crow turned up with big black friend, Crow lets me pat him friend a bit skittish, Yapper came out two crows scared him yapper-less, You wouldn’t believe how much pet-mince crows can eat.

Put aside beach dreams, Pile of marking to do really it’s virtual pile on-line submissions research essays, Must say bit distracting magpie pecking ear, Can’t believe it, He wants more mince!

I’m going for a walk, It’s cold, It’s raining and I’ve run out of mince to feed my flying pigs.

Blessed be.
