Close to Home: 13-Year-Old Boy Cuts His Mom’s Throat While His 1-Week-Old Baby Sister Was Asleep Next to Her
Then He Admitted It to Police.

I’m genuinely curious about where people stand on this topic. The topic being, children who kill their parents. And I don’t mean those people who only want to state the obvious, which is that they are your parents and you shouldn’t kill them. I’m talking to those people who think there’s something deeper going on here. What do you think about these kinds of crimes?
After you read today’s crazy case, let me know down in the comments.
The Crazy Case of Derek Rosa
Irina Garcia had just given birth to a beautiful baby girl and was adjusting to life as a mother of two. She lived in Miami, Florida, with her husband Bryan, her 13-year-old son Derek, and of course her new baby girl who was Derek’s half-sister.
On October 12th, 2023 at 10:12 pm, 39-year-old Irina Garcia was snuggling her week-old baby girl while getting ready for bed. Little did she know, it would be her last time holding her baby. By 11:00 pm, the same baby monitor that captured Irina lying in bed was also capturing her murder.
Around 11:30, just a half hour after her murder, the police received a 911 call from Irina’s son, Derek Rosa. Derek told the 911 operator how he had fatally stabbed his mother and sent pictures to his friends letting them know what he had just done. He also tells them that his half-sister, who was just born a little over a week ago, was in the room with his dead mother.
“I took pictures and I told my friends about it,” said Rosa. “Is that bad?”
Police responded to the call from Rosa and arrived at the Amelia Oaks Apartment Complex in Hialeah. Upon arriving they found Rosa and his baby sister in the home along with a bloody wet kitchen knife that he used to stab his mother.
In this video interview, Derek very matter-of-factly admits to cutting his mother’s throat and stabbing her over 40 times while his half-baby sister was asleep next to her. However, when it comes down to why he did it, he remains silent. When asked in his interview what his motive was, Rosa then decided that it was time for him to ask for a lawyer.
He was immediately taken into custody, where he remained in a juvenile detention facility until his hearing on November 2nd. It was decided that Rosa would be charged as an adult, and he is now being held at the Metro West Detention Center. His trial is scheduled for February 26th, 2024.
My Thoughts
I know sometimes they aren’t given a choice, like in this matter, but I hate when police read minors their rights and act like they understand them. It’s obvious to me that even though they read him his rights and made him read them out loud, he’s still a 13-year-old boy and doesn’t quite understand what’s happening.
The reason I say this is that after that he told them exactly what happened but wanted a lawyer when they asked him why. When he should have asked for a lawyer immediately. But of course, he didn’t understand that because he’s 13.
I’m really sensitive about certain cases where children kill their parents because of my own personal reasons, and often feel like they have a reason (they don’t always do). Since we don’t really know why this happened yet, it’s hard to say what his punishment should be. He definitely needs help.
