Climate Strike/Bless You Children

A Poem

Photo by Mika Baumeister on Unsplash

Bless you children, in the streets,

climate strike climate strike climate strike, causing us to pause, to notice, to finally see you -

marching to do what adults feel too busy to do,

feel too scared to do feel too defeated to do,

or , what some adults might feel is a joke to do, feel is useless to do,

because mass protest is not profitable to us — like Gregor, Giant Insect, well, we might miss work! And well, protest, dissent does not prop up this

system — that is bent on destruction, that is set on pollution and toxicity in words, in government, in planet, in ocean, in air,

bless you children, around the world, the earth is your classroom — it is yours, all yours, we are sorry for the mess -

the streets are your canvas — paint, stomp, write, scream - the adults are your astonished and reluctant pupils, heads on desk, asleep in class -

your examples show us how to liberate ourselves enough to save the planet for you, for us, even for those who do not care, -

we are sorry for the failures, the neglect, the distraction we are sorry for the excuses, the conveniences, the dismissals

we are sorry for the narcissism of politics and greed that has cost you your futures,

disobedience is democracy is peace is salvation - when you are fighting for climate justice and trying to spare

the very ground we all walk on, the only home we have,

when you are the only sane voices in an entire world on fire,

Bless you children — where have you been all our lives?
