Clean up Your Drive

Purposeful Purging

This week I gave my students an assignment to systematically clean and organize their Google drives. So much stuff clutters our drives and devices. One 10th grade student admitted to still having work from 5th grade in the drive on his school issued device. When searching for current work, it takes longer to find it because all of the older, unorganized, and unnecessary drafts and stuff crowds out the focus. It was a daunting task, but it sparked a lot of introspection.

Digital Hoarding

Whether it’s the hard drive on our laptops and desktops, or our iCloud, Dropbox, Google drives or other, most of us need to do a bit of purging. Get rid of old stuff and organize and prioritize what’s left. We’ve gotten too comfortable with saving EVERYTHING in “the cloud”. It allows us to hold on to old things-memories, projects, assignments, videos, even cached images from thousands of websites we’ve visited, and on and on until it becomes an unyielding monstrosity.

Truthfully though, there are lots of duplicates of the same unneeded files. We resist getting rid of stuff because we may need it one day. Or, we lie to ourselves and put off the task of purging to some never coming day in the future. Sigh. An investment of time in cleaning up our digital files can yield so many benefits.

Emotional Clutter and Hoarding

By the same token, our minds and hearts can become disorganized and cluttered. How we feel, what we want, who we miss, and all the things we have neglected to deal with over time can truly weigh down our spirits. It’s hard for real joy and sustained happiness to shine through when it is crowded and clouded by unresolved conflict and unprocessed emotions.

Counseling is a great way to get the help and guidance needed to successfully take on this liberating work. In fact, I recommend it. As you consider that, go ahead and start the work of sorting your stuff. The emotional baggage and unfulfilled expectations that you’ve stuffed away in the recesses of your heart and mind. That feeling of resentment towards a family member. That residue of rejection from a job you didn’t get 2 years ago. That self doubt and blame hanging around like a tattered old sweater….wait!

Is this even mine?

Ever notice a feeling of exhaustion and overwhelm? Have you become numb to the presence of junk in your life, in your mind? Is it now your normal setting? Have you just accepted this? We have so perfected the art of collecting emotional clutter that we are often oblivious of other people’s stuff crowding out our own thoughts, lives, and ideas. It’s normal even human to do so, right?

Wrong.

We have autonomy. We have choice. We have temerity. Sometimes we need reminders to not just drift through life accepting and collecting everything we encounter or experience. Just like a car, if we never change the oil filter, all the stuff it collects turns to sludge, then dries out and chokes the engine. We incur expensive losses in time and opportunities, when simple maintenance can prevent this.

Likewise, we can choose to clean up our spaces-internally and externally. Cluttered environments and emotions rob us of energy, clarity, and drive. They block our paths and diminish our motivation to move forward. They drain the very life out of us, almost without us noticing. We don’t have to go along with this, though. It will take dedicated time and dogged determination and consistency, but the dividends of clearing the clutter-the ROI (return on investment) is incredible!

It’s Worth it

When my student started the work of purging his Google drive, he found a gem. It was a project about what he wanted to be when he grew up hidden among another 547 drafts, incomplete sentences on blank pages, and other unfinished work. The project didn’t even have a title, so it would have been hard to search for and find if he hadn’t come across it while purging.

Everything did not get thrown out, but what he kept is now ordered in color coded folders by year or subject. He felt a great sense of accomplishment at completing this task. It energized him to keep moving forward with order and intention to make his device run faster and his learning process more efficient and effective.

This same purposeful purging can work in our own lives, digitally, but more importantly, emotionally. Take some time to do the work. Clean up and restart your internal drive. Your passion, what you store, what you release and delete. Ask yourself what is taking up valuable space and slowing down your process?

Is it:

* The hurt you’ve carried that is not even yours?

* The disappointment you’ve clung to that is choking your creativity or your belief in yourself?

* The unresolved anger that’s been festering for years?

LET IT GO!

You’ll be surprised at how much faster and smoother you will function in your life. Creativity will be unleashed to fire on all cylinders! Boundless energy will be generated for you to direct towards useful, regenerative thoughts, ideas, and actions that build you up and shine life and positivity on others around you. Let’s just remember to make this purposeful purging a regular practice so we can breathe free and THRIVE!
