Clarence Thomas Is Not Likely To Recuse Himself

Democrats are trying to force his recusal on January 6 matters

The events of January 6, 2021, when Trump supporters invaded the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., took center stage in the news of the world for weeks. It was a surprising and unprecedented action of hundreds of people who had rallied to protest the election of Joe Biden as President of the United States.

Trump led a rally and then told his followers to march to the Capitol. Many did as he suggested. They broke windows and doors to enter the Capitol illegally. They put the lives of the members of Congress and the former Vice President in danger. There was a lot of destruction which took place, and there were deaths.

The Supreme Court has weighed in on some matters from that day. Justice Clarence Thomas has clearly shown his support of Trump and those who followed him.

Thomas came into the Supreme Court with opposition and claims against his moral character. He became a Supreme Court Justice in spite of the opposition. Since he was appointed, he has had periods of keeping a low profile and times of being in the news. Lately, Thomas and his wife have been getting news coverage largely because of their actions with regards to Trump and the election.

In light of the fact that the wife of Thomas has been shown to be a strong supporter of trying to keep Congress from certifying the election and she was at the rally with Trump earlier in the day, it seems evident that Thomas would not be likely to make decisions based on logic or fact related to that day.

Thomas has met and posed for photos with Herschel Walker, the former NFL player who is a candidate for U.S. Senator of Georgia and who has been endorsed by Trump. Walker is running against Reverend Raphael Warnock, who was elected in 2020.

The members of Congress often vote totally along party lines. It seems that is generally the case also with the Supreme Court. Some of the recent actions of Thomas and his wife have garnered public attention because of their strong association and support of Trump.

A suit was brought by Trump to block the disclosure of his communications at the time of January 6, 2021, during the Capitol riot of his supporters. Thomas voted on that case and supported Trump as could be expected.

Democrats in Congress are trying to force the recusal of Thomas from all matters related to the January 6 insurrection. Some have called for him to resign from the Supreme Court. He does not seem to be inclined to do so. He may continue to try to influence decisions of the Court.
