Summary

The web content discusses the importance of feedback for authors on Medium through clapping and commenting, emphasizing the value of both forms of engagement.

Abstract

The article "Clapping and Commenting on Medium" delves into the significance of reader feedback for authors on the platform. It explains that authors seek improvement and rely on two primary forms of feedback: clapping and commenting. Clapping, ranging from a single clap to fifty, serves as a quick acknowledgment of the reader's appreciation, with a higher number of claps indicating more significant value derived from the content. Commenting, on the other hand, provides a space for more in-depth and genuine feedback, allowing readers to express a wide range of emotions and thoughts, thus creating a connection with the author and the community. The article encourages readers to engage with the system by commenting and sharing their perspectives on its effectiveness.

Opinions

  • The author values thoughtful feedback, viewing a range of 50 claps as indicative of a job well done and recognition of valuable content.
  • Comments are seen as a crucial avenue for genuine feedback, with the author expressing hope that their writing benefits at least one person, evoking various emotions.
  • The author acknowledges a technical issue on Medium that has made commenting difficult but appreciates the way another author, Gabriella, has written about the subject.
  • There is an implicit call to action for readers to participate in the feedback system by commenting, which the author believes enhances the sense of community and provides valuable insights to authors.

Clapping and Commenting on Medium

Either or both?

Author’s Screen Capture

Authors need feedback. It’s fair to say that most of us are trying to improve what we do. There are actually two levels of feedback that each of us can provide.

CLAPPING

Bravo, congratulations on a great story, well done, excellent, and so much more. Over the years, I’ve developed a knee-jerk reaction to claps. They are:

1 clap — The clapper reads some or all of the article, post, story, etc. This isn’t even necessarily true. One clap?

50 - claps — Thoughtful and appreciative. Recognition of a job well done. The article, post, or story had value to the person clapping.

COMMENTING

Not a lot to be said. It’s a place for genuine feedback.

As a writer, I’m hopeful that just one person received some benefit from what I’ve written. I'm so pleased if they’re happy, sad, joyful, curious, elated, angry, or any of a hundred other emotions or responses. I’ve done my job.

Also, think of commenting as a way to connect with the author and our community because any number of readers could see your comment.

So, where do you stand? How do you see this system working for you, or does it?

Please take the time to comment. Let me and others know how you feel about the system.

It’s been nearly impossible to give comments because of a problem on Medium’s side, but I do like the way that Gabriella wrote this article:
