Cinderella 2021— A step in the right direction

A feminist take on the classic fairy tale

Last Friday ( 3rd September 2021), Amazon studios released its take on Cinderella. Over the years I have watched multiple adaptations and spinoffs of this age-old fairy tale. But here’s why this one stole my heart.

Cinderella the Entrepreneur

We are used to the fairy tales of girls with classic beauty scoring the prince and living happily ever after. But here we are, with an ambitious heroine who wants to make a living by making dresses and selling them in a male-dominated marketplace. Moreover, she even put her career first when the prince asked her to marry him. What more do we want from a modern-day fairytale?

The evil stepmother is not that evil

I never liked the portrayal of the stepmother in the classic story. I like to believe in the good in people. If they are bad, there is a reason why they are that way. This is why I felt like this version of Cinderella actually did the character some justice with a back story. The evilness is toned down a hundred folds as well.

Fairy godperson

We live in the 21st century. It’s high time for us to move away from gender-stereotyped roles, even though that role is a fairy godmother.

If it’s a choice, I choose me

No, choosing yourself is not selfish. As women, we always tend to choose someone over ourselves. Even if that someone is the husband, kids or sometimes parents. It’s time for us to choose ourselves. It’s time for us to teach our kids the importance of choosing themselves. Cinderella, choosing her career over a life of royalty, is the best lesson that the movie can give to kids.

Final thoughts

Cinderella 2021 is not a perfect movie. With a 4.3 IMDb rating, most critics say that it's the worst adaptation of Cinderella. But these are the kind of fairy tales that our kids should be watching. I would happily choose this over any other fairytale for my kids.
