Cillian Murphy ‘fallen women’ drama to open Berlin Film Festival.
The Berlin Film Festival has announced its opening film for 2024, and it is a highly anticipated drama starring Cillian Murphy. The film, titled ‘Fallen Women’, is based on the true story of a group of Irish women who were sent to Magdalene Laundries, institutions run by the Catholic Church where they were forced to work as unpaid laborers and subjected to abuse and humiliation. The film follows the women’s struggle for justice and dignity, as well as their personal relationships and conflicts.
Cillian Murphy plays a journalist who investigates the scandal and exposes the atrocities committed by the Church and the state. He also develops a romantic interest in one of the women, played by Saoirse Ronan. The film is directed by Lenny Abrahamson, who previously helmed the Oscar-winning ‘Room’ and the critically acclaimed ‘Normal People’. The screenplay is written by Mark O’Rowe, who also collaborated with Murphy on ‘Intermission’ and ‘Perrier’s Bounty’.
The film is expected to be a strong contender for the Golden Bear, the festival’s top prize, as well as for other awards. It is also likely to generate controversy and debate, as it tackles a sensitive and painful topic that has affected thousands of women in Ireland and beyond. The film’s producers have stated that they consulted with survivors and activists to ensure accuracy and respect.
The Berlin Film Festival will run from February 7 to 17, 2024. ‘Fallen Women’ will have its world premiere on the opening night, followed by a press conference and a gala screening. The film will also be released in cinemas and streaming platforms later this year.
