Cigar Box Christmas

I no longer can lavish store-bought gifts on my loved ones. I am too embarrassed to rampage through pound or dollar stores to hunt for those perfect gifts.

Gold and diamonds belong to the Christmas past.

Now, I accumulate cigar boxes. I use to get them free. Now some tobacconist has the nerve to charge me a dollar bill for them.

I become pretty picky about the box. It must not be made from common paper like the picture, above from Unsplash. The box must be wood. The box must have contained expensive cigars. You can just tell by the look of the box. The box had expensive cigars if the box has brass fittings. Cheap cigar boxes have no fittings. They are kept closed by a pin that is pushed to keep the box closed. I don’t smoke cigars, but I have learned from observation the good ones to purchase.

I was never this fussy until they started to charge me. It has taken some of the fun out of my craft.

Cigar boxes can also be turned into guitars. There are even kits available for the conversion.

My interest is taking the cigar box and turning it into a personal keepsake for the person. It makes the box special. They beat me knitting sweaters. I can’t knit. They beat me cooking. I can’t cook. Birdhouses are not my thing either. I was kicked out of the woodshop in high school. Art was ok, but throwing pots ended up looking like mud pies.

I am very happy to share my idea with all of you who hate crafts. I don’t call cigar boxes a craft. I call them upcycle. Saved from being burnt and destroyed. Are they returned to cigar companies? Give people jobs making more. I am helping the economy. Trees are being cut down anyhow. I don’t know how many trees are cut down to make cigar boxes. I should do the research.

Here comes the fun part. Take a look at my creation for this Christmas giving.

Enjoy!
