Chunk the Truck

The Diary of an RV Newbie, Part 5

August 25, 2020

We spent the rest of July and August pinpointing what kind of RV was going to be the right one for us. Opting not to get a Class A, we decided to focus on the fifth wheels. After taking the advice from so many RVers, we decided to figure out what kind we wanted first and layout. Then we would look for the truck capable of pulling it.

We wanted a truck that could not only pull the needed weight but not be strained doing it; especially if we decide to take it into the mountains. The last thing we are going to want is to cause unnecessary wear and tear on the motor or worse: Go down a mountain like an uncontrolled locomotive. Therefore, we felt that we need at least an F-350.

Unfortunately, we have run into a snag: The truck market is inflated. It’s not cheap buying a fifth wheel and to add a truck on top of it is going to be a pretty penny.

Researching Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and various online dealerships, people want a ridiculous price for a used F-350. I’m seeing some posted for about as much as it costs a new truck, but has 350,000 miles on it!

However, I think Karma paid me a visit today, decided to cash in on her I.O.U., and it was in the form of some good luck. If you know me, the only luck I tend to have is bad luck. After the year I’ve been having, I feel like this is the equivalent of winning a mini-lottery.

Not only did we find a truck we can afford, but it will haul more than what we need. What did we get? A 2005 F-550!

I have to admit, it is a lot more truck than what we need. However, the price is right and I doubt we’ll have another opportunity like this. It felt so right and the seller was amazing. He did a Facetime session with us to give a tour and we loved what we saw. Knowing this truck was not going to stay on the market long, we put down a deposit, I flew the hubs down to Miami, and he drove it back to Pensacola.

I have to admit, that upon seeing this mechanical beast, I was a little intimidated. The only truck I have driven was a Toyota Tacoma (who we named Taco) and now I’m jumping into the deep end with what feels like a mini-semi. However, my husband reassured me it’s easy to drive. Seeing it in our driveway, it towered over Taco and I felt like I was about to sh*t my pants. It was HUGE! Realizing that I was a bit intimidated, Jim walked me around the truck and it helped calm my nerves. He even encouraged me to drive it.

At that moment, I fell in love and decided to name our truck “Chunk” because he’s a little chubby and a hunk. (A little like my handsome husband.)

Driving around town, I could not help but listen to my intuition and suddenly feel that everything that I was doing seems to be right. For once, everything is falling into place and I’m more convinced than ever that this transition to full-time RVing is meant for us and we are doing the right thing.
