Our Christmas pears from our friends Joe Haldeman, an accomplished and world-renown science fiction writer, and his lovely wife have arrived today. The pears are shipped to us from Oregon’s Rogue Valley.

Besides the fact that the pear tree is another version of The Tree of Life, in Chinese mythology, the pear is a symbol of immortal life due to the longevity of the tree. Pears were also considered sacred to three goddesses: Hera, Aphrodite, and Pomona.

As much as I loved reading about the symbolism of pears, one thing stands out about our yearly box of pears: they are the gift of kindness from our friends who brought us to America when we were in our 20s and have changed and sweetened our lives.

It also appears that the pears will sweeten our 2022!
