Summary

The 2020 holiday season is marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, social and political unrest, and a shift towards smaller, more intimate Christmas celebrations focused on love and joy within the constraints of health guidelines.

Abstract

The holiday season of 2020 arrives amidst the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic, which has significantly impacted family gatherings and traditions. Despite warnings to stay home, many traveled for Thanksgiving, leading to concerns about further spread of the virus. The year has been challenging, with the pandemic causing widespread illness, death, and economic, spiritual, and emotional distress. Additionally, issues of racism and police brutality have been at the forefront, sparking widespread protests. The U.S. presidential election added to the year's turmoil with a contentious race and ongoing disputes over the results. As Christmas approaches, the emphasis is on smaller, safer celebrations with an emphasis on love, compassion, and the true spirit of the season. Many traditional events have been canceled or moved online, and while the festivities will be different, the essence of Christmas as a time for joy, peace, and togetherness remains.

Christmas is a time for love

Thanksgiving passed during the coronavirus pandemic of 2020. Although medical experts and government officials advised that people should stay home during the Thanksgiving holiday, many thousands traveled to visit family and friends. The COVID numbers, which are expected to go even higher as a result of the Thanksgiving travel and family gatherings, are not certain yet.

It was a quiet holiday with just a few people together for most Thanksgiving dinners. Large family dinners were not held in most families as they complied with the advice they were given. Smaller turkeys were at a premium in the grocery stores as large turkeys were not needed. Most families still cooked a nice Thanksgiving feast for their smaller group.

This year has been full of all kinds of challenges. The coronavirus pandemic has caused sickness and death which has hit many families. People have had to die alone with only medical personnel in attendance when they left this life. Economic, spiritual, and emotional health suffered as well as the physical. Life has been difficult.

Then racism became a huge issue in the United States with the killing of Black people by police officers and others. Black Lives Matter became the cry. Protests and demonstrations were the norm for weeks on end.

A heated and contentious election was held for President of the United States. There were many other elections also throughout the cities and states. Donald Trump still does not concede the election although it is clear that he has lost. Joe Biden has been declared the winner.

Now the holiday season has officially arrived. This Christmas is expected to be much different as most people may follow the restrictions and recommendations to stay home. People have been told to stay mostly with their own household members instead of meeting with others.

There will be changes this Christmas. There will not be as many holiday parties. Some people look forward to attending Christmas concerts or The Nutcracker ballet every year at this season. Many events will not be held or will be virtual.

The Christian world remembers and commemorates the birth of Christ during this season when love should be foremost in the minds of everyone. Caring and compassion should be practiced by all.

Christmas should be the time for joy and peace. It should be a time for fun and enjoyment with family and friends. Although there should be no large gatherings and many families will need to stay apart this year, Christmas is still a special time of year. The Christmas decorations, Christmas music, and virtual programs can be enjoyed. Love should abound.
