Summary

In the context of the HBO series "Westworld," a woman overcomes personal trauma to see beauty in the world and takes action against those who have wronged her.

Abstract

The narrative revolves around a resilient woman who endures the horrors inflicted by mankind, including abuse, violence, and exploitation, as depicted in the series "Westworld." Despite these atrocities, she chooses to recognize and hold onto the beauty that exists within herself and the world around her. This beauty is exemplified through small acts of kindness and humanity, such as a mother's playful interaction with her daughter in a meadow, a considerate gesture from a stranger, and a soldier's moral choice. The woman's journey is one of empowerment and transformation, as she gains the ability to remember her past in vivid detail and harnesses the power to control those who intend to harm her. Parallel to her story, another woman embarks on a quest to find her daughter, gathering allies along the way. The series uses these character arcs to reflect on the pervasive greed and ugliness of the real world while also highlighting the potential for beauty and change.

Opinions

  • The author perceives the character's ability to see beauty amidst adversity as a powerful and rare commodity in a world often marred by ugliness and corruption.
  • There is a clear critique of the way society, particularly men, abuse power and exploit others, whether it be through violence against women, big game hunting, or data theft.
  • The woman's strength is emphasized, portraying her as not only equal to but surpassing the strength of men, capable of withstanding extreme violence and adversity.
  • The series is seen as a mirror to real-world issues, suggesting that it captures the essence of human greed and the potential for redemption and beauty.
  • The author believes that the narrative of "Westworld" offers a glimpse into what the world could be if individuals chose to embrace and foster beauty and positivity instead of succumbing to destructive impulses.

Choose to See Beauty

How one woman saw beauty in the midst of hell and saved the world.

Hundreds died before that moment of witnessing beauty happened. The woman remembered everything that had ever been done to her and precisely who did it.

She’d seen all the horrors man does when he’s paying for the right in a world where he’s safe from judgement.

The way man uses women. He abuses and rapes; beats and kills them.

The way a man gets a hard-on for big game hunting and killing for pleasure.

The way he steals personal data and uses it for his own gain.

But the woman is as strong as a man and more. She’s stunning and able to withstand bullets and bombings.

In a world such as ours, choosing to see beauty within ourselves and others is a precious commodity. Many with power who should value this, choose to overlook, abuse or kill the ability to bring about change which would envelop us in joy, peace and happiness.

The soft-spoken woman lived through decades of playing her part. A creature of habit, loving and caring for her daddy. Loving her friend, appreciating her surroundings, and catching glimpses of beauty. A mother playing in a meadow with her daughter, a gentleman picking up a dropped can of peaches, a soldier making the right decision.

Yet, abusers, rapists, and murderers destroyed her life over and over again.

Until one day she remembered everything in technicolour clarity.

Another woman, in a different world, with many different pasts also awakes and remembers. She sees her daughter, their carefree life in a little house surrounded by fields of golden wheat.

She finds she has the power to control people who would do her harm. Wielding this mind control, she scours worlds for her daughter who she saw, in a memory, being taken from her by native Indians.

While Delores is killing every man who ever hurt her, Maeve is gathering allies to help in the search for her daughter.

If you haven’t guessed it yet, this is Westworld. To me, the character stories capture and represent the overarching greed and ugliness of our real world. But also a tiny glimmer of the beauty it could be.

You’ll need to watch the three seasons to find out exactly what the beauty was that she saw …
