Chinese group tours will be back in Korea soon?

A resurgence of Chinese group tourism in South Korea may be just around the corner.

The streets of Seoul are bracing for an inrush of Chinese tour groups, potentially as soon as tomorrow, 11 August 2023.

This revival comes as China is predicted to lift its long-standing ban on group tours to Korea, a first in six years.

Reports suggest that Beijing has been in talks with the Korean Embassy, signaling its intent to reintroduce Korea into its portfolio of approved overseas group tour destinations.

This move comes after Korea was notably omitted from the list in March 2017.

Since 2017, China has restricted group tours to Korea in a retaliation move against the country’s deployment of the US-led Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system.

Up until now, only solo Chinese tourists have had the liberty to explore Korea.

Thus, if the tides change, we might soon see a bustling revival of group tourism from China, adding to the influx of foreigners to Korea.
