The latter, if successfully concluded, would make China the first major trading partner of Russia to sign such an agreement with Moscow since 2014.
In October last year, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang called for closer economic cooperation between China and Russia during his visit to Moscow. He also proposed that both countries sign a free trade deal by 2020 — an idea that was welcomed by Russian President Vladimir Putin at the time but has since stalled due to differences in opinion over how best it should be implemented.

The visit comes as part of a broader effort to strengthen ties between the two countries, which are working on plans for deeper cooperation in areas such as infrastructure and energy projects on both sides of their border.
Wang will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday before attending a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, who has been foreign minister since 2004.
Wang’s visit comes as Beijing and Moscow continue to expand their economic ties. The two countries are currently negotiating a bilateral investment treaty and an Sino-Russian free trade agreement, which would strengthen economic cooperation and give Russian companies greater access to China’s market.
