Where Oh Where Do Chicken Wings Come From?

Have you ever stopped to think where everything comes from? I’m not talking in a spiritual way or an evolutionary way, but rather in a chicken wing sort of way!

Years ago, I used to write a monthly newsletter for a client of mine, and I was able to write whatever I wanted, as long as it was entertaining and not business related. Since then, that whole business has disappeared but I still have a BUNCH of writings I did. I didn’t want them to not ever be seen again, so I’ll occasionally post one to this publication.

So, here it is…

I was at a local establishment the other day watching a sporting even with some friends of mine, when I started noticing something….the number of chicken wings being served. (sometimes referred to as buffalo wings)

So here’s the big thought I had, where did all those chicken wings come from?

Let me throw another piece of the puzzle out and then we’ll ask that same question.

I counted 20 people eating wings while I was there, so I’m sure there were more people before I got there and after I left. Using basic math, “let’s do some siferin’ “ (I love quoting Jethro from the Beverly Hillbillies!)

If each of those 20 people ate 10 wings, that’s 200 wings total, right? I live in a major city, so it was safe to assume there were other establishments serving wings as well.

Let’s keep things simple and conservative and say there were 10 establishments in my city serving wings on that given day. (Yes, I know there are a LOT more, but I studied math and I know my “tens table” pretty well, so we’ll keep things easy, ok?)

Let’s take it one step further: If there were 10 establishments in 2 major cities in every state serving chicken wings (that’s not out of the question, is it?), that means there were 20 places in 50 states doing the chicken wing dance. Which means a total of 1000 establishments.

On that particular day, which was a major sporting event day, I’ll bet it was safe to assume there were at least 20 orders of wings at each place. If my math is right, (which by golly I’ll bet it is!) that would be 20,000 orders of wings, with 10 wings per order. Now, let’s just say each of these restaurants only sell wings on 100 days of the year, that means 20,000,000 (Twenty MILLION!) wings per year!

If you have 20,000,000 chicken wings, that means you’ll need 10,000,000 chickens, right?

Now, remember my original question: Where do things come from?

So, where did all those chickens come from? Let’s take it even further.

Is there some farmer out in the world who raises 10,000,000 mini chickens a year just for the chicken wings? What does use to feed them? How much chicken wire does he have to use to keep them all together? How many acres are used to raise 10,000,000 mini chickens? Do these mini chickens lay mini eggs?

It can get real mind boggling when you thing about it. But please, leave the siferin’ to the experts!

So, next time there’s a break in the conversation, you now have something to talk about!

I usually write about health and fitness stuff (which you can find more articles below), but this was in my archives and I thought I would break it out for a bit of feel good reading!
