Chapter 6 : Crying Wolf

The deeper problem of going after everything and everyone all the time.

My name is Augustin Vallée. I am a 24 year old, French aerospace engineer. Like many people I don’t want to keep living in this world. At least on the path we are on right now. I see where we will end up in a few years and I don’t want my future to be like that. I am using Medium as an outlet to give you my point of view and most importantly as a place to have a conversation with you. I want to find ways to make the world a better place and I need your help.

This concept was first brought by Aesop, a Greek writer from around 500 BCE. The boy who cried wolf is about a shepherd boy who was playing with the villagers always crying wolf. One day the danger became real. But nobody believed him and every sheep got eaten.

The moral of this fable is, by always screaming about something when we are not sure about it, when it will be true, nobody will believe us. It doesn’t seem like much and we all have done it when we were kids. It wasn’t for bad intentions and still we might have lost some of the trust our parents had in us, or put ourselves in bad situations that could have been avoided if we had help.

This is happening more and more nowadays because of the rise of social media. Everybody has the same voice and can go after anybody, whether they know him/her or not. It can come really handy sometimes to catch some really bad people like sex offenders or killers. Some other times it can be more hurtful both for the one that is screaming wolf and the ones that are pointed out.

Let’s take the example of the MeToo movement. Wonderful work of catching some really disgusting people that deserved to be taken down. But there was also a part that was just going after everybody that wasn’t liked for whatever reason. It became an excuse to get someone out of the way. That really hurt the movement and the real victims that wanted to come forward.

But there is a bigger problem. All those movements of people going after something that is really pissing them off at a particular moment, going for the throat of others, but in a really short period of time and then moving on. Short attention span or just lack of research and proof is taking out some of the credibility of more legitimate actions. Great cause are not as followed as they should be because we are tired of always changing focus. And we all know it is going to go away soon, right ?

Well, it shouldn’t be the case. Movements like MeToo and BLM should go on forever with the same voice they started with. Real problems shouldn’t be abandoned like some YouTube drama of hair vitamins (that as been going on for way too long for nothing btw). And yet they are because that is what we are used to, having the attention span of a fish. Changing cause to what is cool at the moment to look good in front of others.

In France we had two terrorists attack in a short period of time. Police officers and firefighters were literal Gods. They were loved by everyone for their courage. Few years forward they are dragged in the mud because they are fighting back protesters and because there is insane police violence in some other countries. Those violence don’t really apply to France, of course, there is some issues, but they are super rare, the last police death was four years ago (I am not in any way saying that it is ok, it is just not worth the reaction this late).

This is the exact same thing that is happening with the movements. Imagine being a hero and then becoming a monster because of something that isn’t linked to you in any ways. It is destroying all the good that was done before. The same thing is happening with health workers. They were applauded every single day for more than a month and now we are already forgetting about them. And I am sure that they are going to be dragged in the mud for some reason not too long from now.

Everything that I said seems a little paradoxical, right ? Actually, not at all. Only one problem is responsible for all of it. The only thing we have to do is, stay calm, check the facts before throwing them out there and stay focused on the fight until it is won. Take a step back and put it in perspective to see if it is worth screaming wolf or not. This is not something that should be impulsive. At the same time don’t be scared to come forward, if you have proof and fight for it. You will be eared and justice will be done.

We really need to stop cancelling people this easily. Speak up for what is good, but don’t scream to everything. This behavior is hurting worthy causes, our voice is getting lost and won’t be eared as much as it should. There is only so much impact we can have. We need to keep it for something that is worth it and keep fighting until we won, not until it is not cool anymore.

I want to build a place where we can discuss this war and find a strategy to get all of us out of it as soon as possible and with long term solutions. I can’t do it alone and I need your help. Let’s start a conversation right here to find a way to put those thoughts into actions.
