Chapter 2 : 2020 the Red Flag Year
It is only the beginning of June and we had so many reality checks on our place on earth as humans. We need to wake up and learn from all those events.
My name is Augustin Vallée. I am a 24 year old, French aerospace engineer. Like many people I don’t want to keep living in this world. At least on the path we are on right now. I see where we will end up in a few years and I don’t want my future to be like that. I am using Medium as an outlet to give you my point of view and most importantly as a place to have a conversation with you. I want to find ways to make the world a better place and I need your help.
Feel free to comment what you thought about this article, ask me questions and correct me if I made some mistakes (I am only human, we all make mistakes). Help me find a roadmap to make the world a better place, find the best solutions for our future and the future of our kids. Let’s start to change things for the better, together, right here and right now. Once again, please speak up, this is a conversation.
This year, even though we have barely been through half of it, have been filled with red flags on our behavior. So many things have already happened, most of which we couldn’t have anticipated. I am not going to get into the details on the event themselves, I assume you already eared of it and there are already so many articles on every single one of them. The only thing I am going to talk about is the takeaway we can have on those events. All of them are showing weaknesses in our society, we can’t keep ignoring them anymore.
Australia Bush Fire
It started off in June 2019 and kept on going until March 2020. It was months of straight devastation. Million hectares of land have been burnt down into ashes. This really shows the power of fire. We can’t and will never be able to contain anything of this magnitude. We are so weak against any elements, even though firefighters did an outstanding job to contain it and save as many lives as then possibly could, they could have never defeated it without a change in the weather.
The land was so dry that a fire could start in a blink of an eye. The cause of all of that is a warmer weather than usual caused by global warming. A little change of +1°C average in the year caused the biggest bush fire in Australia’s history. If that is not a wake up call I don’t know what is. Sure, it has now ended, but that doesn’t mean it could not happen again. The environmental impact this event had on the earth is insane. Million tonnes of CO2 have been released in the air and billion animals died. It is going to take years for nature to heal.
We are the only cause of those horrifying natural disasters that we can’t control. The worst is that we didn’t even learn from it, our behaviour haven’t change at all. It will happen again and it might be even worse.
World War 3
There is always a lot of tension between countries because they all want to be more powerful than others. They want to be right and apply what they believe in to everybody. Whether it is religious or not the action is always the same. Go to war to fight for your beliefs and show how big your d*ck is. At the end of the day this is all it is a fight to see which one has the biggest. Which one is going crush the other. We have the chance to be in really peaceful countries, but the war is always a little mistake away.
World peace is a myth and always will be as long as people keep on going with a mentality of imposing beliefs to others. Nobody knows anything for sure. Nobody knows what we are doing here or why we are doing it. We are trying to build things to give us the illusion that we have a purpose and that we matter. The threat of someone taking away the only thing feeling real and useful pushes us on extreme behavior that are objectively horrifying.
Covid-19 Pandemic
This is the event that is filled with the most red flags and lessons of them all. First, anything can happen on a scale we could have never imagined. A pandemic is an insane thing to wrap our head around. A disease just appears out of nowhere and few months later the entire world is in lockdown to prevent us from dying. Or lives don’t hold to anything, we are really fragile living organism even though we like to think otherwise. We have the change to be able to create cures for diseases and vaccine to prevent us from getting them. But those things take a lot of time to develop and test. Meanwhile, we have to take actions to keep us alive as long as possible.
This really enlightened the weakness of our health system, the infrastructures are not made for this type of events and nobody is prepared for it. We can’t blame anybody for it because we could have never predicted anything like this. With the way our economy works, it make sense to reduce the number of beds in hospitals and the number of medical hardware. All of that is really expensive and we don’t use it that much in regular times.
As I said in the previous paragraph our economic system didn’t allow us to be as prepared as we should have been. Even worst than that, at some point we had to choose between staying in lockdown or opening up again to save the economy. The question of risking our lives for the economy became serious and we chose the economy. This shows how weak and fragile the thing that is driving our world is. Everything revolves around money, we created it from the ground up and yet it is not adapted to our lives. It can’t hold up by itself, insane amount of money had to be put back in in order to keep it barely floating.
A great thing that came out of this pandemic is the environmental impact it had. Of course it wasn’t intended at all and it’s been a few weeks since the countries are starting to reopen and things are already getting back to what it was. The NO2 and CO2 levels were at an all time low. The Nasa’s image below really shows the insane difference it made when humans are in lockdown. This really should put us back in our place. If we all die the world would get its life back and everything would be better for every other living organism. If bees die, we die along with other living organism. We are a threat to the entire earth and every fauna and flora living on it, including us.

It is still not over and yet everybody want to go back to normal. Going in night clubs and restaurants, being able to travel again. Is that really what we want ? Going back to normal ? A normal that doesn’t care about the environment, a normal that only focuses on our comfort ? I don’t. We could have used this opportunity to rebuild our civilisation on better foundation, and yet we didn’t. We are starting to learn from, and the pace is starting to catch up what is needed.
Black life matter
I really don’t understand why this is still a question. Are we still f*cking chimps ? Didn’t we evolve at all ? How is it that some people still think that the color of someone’s skin has an influence on who he is ? Do racists have a part of their brain that is missing ? It is insane to me that, in a world with such scientific knowledge, equality of color and gender is still controversial. The fact that segregation was only 55 years ago is insane on its own.
To put things back in perspective USA doesn’t historically belong to white people at all. USA belong to Native American, it belongs to natives, period. Stop saying that your are invaded, you are the invaders, you don’t have any rights to say anything. I don’t even understand why racism is still a thing in 2020, that is not something that I understand.
People aren’t judged for the color of their eyes or their hair so why are they judged on the color of their skin ? This is the exact same thing. As animals we have different characteristics like the color of our skin, the shape of our eyes, our nose, our height … depending on where we come from, that doesn’t make us less human. This is just evolution, that’s it, there is nothing deeper than that. We have differences get over it and stop being a stupid b*tch.
Arctic gasoline leak
Fresh news as I am writing this article ! New environmental disaster caused by humans and their stupid obsession with oil. Money is more important than nature apparently, so much so that they took too long to declare the incident. The more 2020 goes on, the more my faith in humanity diminish. Through every event in history, really few is learned. The same mistakes happen again and again. The only thing that are well implemented and that are changing faster are related to money. That makes our civilisation move not the environment. This is what the majority of humans cares about, this is their drive. Because it is always a short term comfort rather than a little effort for a long term benefit.
We know fossil fuels are a threat to every living organism and yet we are still using way too much. They are talking about transition. Great, but now act on it faster, we don’t have 30 years to try to start doing something. The impact of ecological disasters like this one can be counted in months shaved out of the number of years left to change.
Let’s take a step back to appreciate the opportunities 2020 is giving us. Rather than saying “This year keeps getting worse, when is it going to end ? When will we be able to go back to our normal lives ?”, use all those lessons to put us on a better path. Everything we do is messed up at so many levels on things that we have created. All the things that are the most important to us like the economy, money, comfort, entertainment … all of that is artificial. We created it, so we can change it as we please. Don’t be afraid of change, if we don’t do anything we are going toward a certain death.
We are supposed to be the most evolved animals, we are capable of solving complex subjects and theories. We discovered so many things that seemed impossible even a few decades ago. There is a rover on Mars, rockets are landing back on earth by themselves, cars are driving autonomously, we can exchange information as rate that we couldn’t even imagine, we know how to decode and encode DNA, we are working an a fusion reactor to recreate the process the sun is using to create energy.
All those things are insane and we never thought we would be cable of accomplishing them and yet we did. I am sure we can solve problems as simple as ending racism, solving environmental issues and finding a way to free ourselves from our creations. It is way easier than it looks, there will be backlash obviously because we don’t like change and discomfort. But this is all worth it, we can’t please everybody so lets fight for what is right for us and the earth in the long term.
I want to build a place where we can discuss this war and find a strategy to get all of us out of it as soon as possible and with a long term solution. I can’t do it alone and I need your help. Let’s start a conversation right here to find a way to put those thoughts into action.
