Chapter 11: The Mindset Needed For Our Evolution
Our world has changed in ways we could have never imagined. We need to keep up with it in order to survive.
My name is Augustin Vallée. I am a 24-year-old, French aerospace engineer. Like many people, I don’t want to keep living in this world. At least on the path we are on right now. I see where we will end up in a few years and I don’t want my future to be like that. I am using Medium as an outlet to give you my point of view and most importantly as a place to have a conversation with you. I want to find ways to make the world a better place and I need your help.
We are at a point of humanity where the mindset of the beginning of the century and the new thinking are colliding. In the first category, I will put a lot of people even though they might not like each other. The common point between them is living in the past.
Highly religious people being against same-sex marriage or abortion, people still thinking that color changes someone’s worth, the ones against new technologies, sticking as much as they can to books and paper. Finally, the petrol heads that don’t care about nature, buying as many useless things as they possibly can only care about their own little comfort.
On the other side, we can find open-minded people that are happy to work with black, gay, transgender, Asian, Christian, Muslim humans. They see the world as it is, a place where we are supposed to survive caring about others and the nature that is surrounding us. They embrace technology as a way to get on a better path to what we are supposed to be. This is an over-exaggeration of the situation, but it still is really close to the truth.
This separation in the population is keeping us from evolving and is even threatening our society. We are divided at a critical time where we should only be one. All of it is a question of mindset and priority. In this article, I am only going to talk about the mindset that we need to implement in order to get as close a can to a utopic civilization.
- Kindness: This one sort of goes without saying. If we are kind to each other, life can only get better. The more help we can find, the fewer problems we will have.
- Humility: This is, in my opinion, the most important. We have to be fully aware of what we are capable of and where our place is. We might be the smartest animals on earth, but it doesn’t take out the fact that we are only animals. We are only a more evolved kind of monkeys. Nature is stronger than we will ever be, we can’t know everything and we can’t do whatever we want. Even at smaller scales, in our daily interactions. A random person can still teach things to an expert in any field. To put it all in a nutshell, remember that we have limits and we are not perfect.
- Selflessness: I already made a full article on this one so you can go read it if you want. To do a little summary, as humans our only purpose is to make our lives better. The only good, long term way to do so is about giving our lives for the greater good. I am not saying that you have to be a monk in the mountain. In the sense that every action we take should have a positive impact on humanity, even though it might hurt us in the short term. If you want some examples you can go check out the article.
Only those 3 qualities are needed. We can put everything else in it. Like saying that we don’t know everything and admitting that it is ok, this is humility. We might not know it right now, but maybe in a few decades, we will. Saying that we need to work to be the best version of ourselves, this is both humility and selflessness. Taking the time to understand each other to be able to stay connected and be able to work together, this is kindness.
Let’s just look at history for a sec. Go back to Egypt thousands of years ago. At this time there was one of the greatest civilizations that ever existed. They were so ahead of their time in so many fields like medicine and construction. But somehow they vanished. How is it possible that a population we still admire today got destroyed? Because they didn’t evolve with their time and with the needs of their civilians.
The exact same things happened to the Roman Empire in the 5th century. It was the biggest and greatest empire that ever existed. Many scientific discoveries have been made during this time mostly in astronomy. Even in politics, a lot was made that we still use today. But their greatness got to their head and that was the start of the downfall.
We can easily see a pattern here. As soon a civilization starts to think of themselves as the greatest that ever existed. As the only ones that know every truth. As an infallible superior species. Then it’s the beginning of the highway to hell. The world evolves without us and we start to vanish along with our outdated mindset.
I want to build a place where we can discuss this war and find a strategy to get all of us out of it as soon as possible and with long term solutions. I can’t do it alone and I need your help. Let’s start a conversation right here to find a way to put those thoughts into action. Go read my previous stories and give me your feedback.
