Chapter 1 : The War of the New Generation

Every generation had their struggles adapted to the period they lived in. What battle does the modern generation have to fight ?

My name is Augustin Vallée. I am a 24 year old, French aerospace engineer. Like many people I don’t want to keep living in this world. At least on the path we are on right now. I see where we will end up in a few years and I don’t want my future to be like that. I am using Medium as an outlet to give you my point of view and most importantly as a place to have a conversation with you. I want to find ways to make the world a better place and I need your help.

Feel free to comment what you thought about this article, ask me questions and correct me if I made some mistakes (I am only human, we all make mistakes). Help me find a roadmap to make the world a better place, find the best solutions for our future and the future of our kids. Let’s start to change things for the better, together, right here and right now. Once again, please speak up, this is a conversation.

The first generation of the modern world was the one that had the toughest and most difficult battle to fight. The war was real and the choices were life or death. Two world wars in less than 50 years. People were divided and fighting for what they believed in with everything they had. It was a question of freedom, religions and territory.

After this dark period, everything had to be rebuilt. From the economy to the governments and the countries themselves. After WWII, most buildings in Europe were completely destroyed. But there was hope again, the war has ended, people didn’t have to fear for their lives and for the lives of their loved ones anymore.

This was the begging of the glorious thirty. A beautiful time where the economy was thriving, people were happy and full of hope. Obviously it wasn’t all rainbows and unicorns. There were struggles and difficult times, just far less important than what they had already lived. When humans are hopeful for a better future, they are reproducing to keep the world on going, this was the baby boom. The population had massively decreased because of the wars, there was far less men than before, families were torn apart, it was time to rebuild that too.

This generation, that is now called the boomers, they are in charge of the current world. They have been raised in a beautiful and easy time. Their parents and grandparents that had seen the wars didn’t have the same perspective of life. Comfort and freedom were the most important things. They had a united goal to make the world a better place for children to live in, an easier and more comfortable world than the one they grew up in.

The issue we are now facing is the direct consequence of all of those evolutions. The environment was never a priority in this process of life improvement. Most of the things that have been made until recently have just been created for our comfort and entertainment. They didn’t have the knowledge and the data necessary to see the global climate crisis coming. All of that was a first for everybody. Now we do have data that shows the slow and yet certain death we promise to our planet.

The ice is melting because of global warming, we saw the number of natural disasters tripled from the late 70s, we saw the formation of a new continent made out of plastic in the middle of the ocean, we see the life of thousands of flora and fauna species getting threatened every day by our actions. I am not even going to get into the details and the science, there already so many articles about it and we shouldn’t have to explain it anymore at this point.

This current mindset of making the economy as strong as possible no matter the consequences is the war our generation have to fight. The best example is Greta Thunberg, the young Swedish environmental activist, against the US president Donal Trump. A 73 year old boomer that wants to make billions against a 17 year old that want to save the earth. There isn’t anything more opposite than this two.

This is an oversimplification of the situation with two extremes ,but that doesn’t mean we are not involved. There is so many things going wrong with our civilisation, all the simple habits we have like buying bottled water, the way we are making food, buying new things all the time. We are used to having everything right away, going to the grocery store where we can find everything all year long. Everything comes easy for us and yet we don’t really need all of that. Does the consequences of this comfort is worth it ?

Our thirst for comfort is killing our planet. Humans are seen as the most powerful living organism and yet we are killing our only home. We are acting like parasites, draining all the resources of our host, not thinking if those actions could actually kill it. This is what we have to face, the hard truth we don’t want to think about, we messed up, we didn’t take the right path. The life we chose isn’t made for the long run, we are eating the earth away, destroying it little by little, consistently years after years. A constant fight against the earth is a war we can’t win, we have already lost it from the begging, and yet we are still trying our hardest to keep going this way.

A small part of the population as been pointing this issue for years and the new generation is seeing it more and more clearly as the years goes on. This is still a controversial topic, something that needs to be taken care of on the long term, to figure out the pros and cons. This way of handling situations, by postponing it, is a natural human defence mechanism. Ostrich have a similar strategy, putting their head in the sand when they feel threatened. We can’t keep going on this path anymore, we don’t have any other choice but to put the environment in our top priority. We need to face reality right now.

This pressure of having to fight for our lives and having to fight against our own in order to build a sustainable society is what we now have to deal with. The constant battle between trying to keep the comfort the previous generation built for us and burning it down to build a long term solution. It was all made with good intentions and nobody could have anticipated the outcomes. A small part of the population gave the alert and it is starting to catch up years later.

We are not meant to be the population saviours, we are meant to be the earth saviours. The future of the human race is in our hands, now is our last chance to act and change our path for a better one. We still can do it even if the odds are less and less in our favor.

I want to build a place where we can discuss this war and find a strategy to get all of us out of it as soon as possible and with a long term solution. I can’t do it alone and I need your help. Let’s start a conversation right here to find a way to put those thoughts into action.
