Changing The World One Cup Of Tea At A Time
Yesterday, I was at Tim Hortons having a cup of tea which was not remarkable because it is something I do every day.
Every day I walk the dog and stop in for a cup of tea at Tim Hortons.
Yesterday, a woman came in with a ceramic mug which she gave to the server who filled it with coffee.
That’s one less paper cup and one less plastic lid going to the dump. I thought to myself.
Then I thought. That one small act by a single person is not going to have much impact on the huge problem of global warming.
But what if her action inspired others to do the same. What if just a few people started bringing mugs to the coffee shop. And what if they caused others to think about taking small actions.
We live in a global society in which one person’s actions affects others. It is small, seemingly insignificant actions that build into personal and social habits that grow and multiply.
Later that day I went to the cupboard and took out a cup.
How can I carry this cup with me when I walk the dog.
I found one of my wife’s old purses which has a simple universal design.
This is not a purse. This is a murse ( a man’s purse).
Today, when I took the dog for a walk I put the cup into my murse and slung it over my shoulder.
I handed the cup to the server. She filled it with coffee and instead of charging me the usual $1.60. She only charged $1.50.
People going through the drive-through often use refillable travel mugs and they are charged less.
So not only am I saving the environment I am actually getting paid to do it.
This is like Medium. I would write this article for free but maybe I will get paid for it. This month I will get back $3.00 from Tim Hortons and maybe the same or even more than that from Medium.
But more importantly maybe somebody will read this and decide to use a refillable mug at work or stop using paper plates or maybe eat a bit less meat. If enough of us take small actions who know what will happen. One of your small personal actions could have a ripple effect and cause social and Political change.
