Changing Careers During, And Post Covid-19 Pandemic

Change is coming, and we should all be ready for it.

Last year the covid-19 pandemic has at least cost 47 million Americans their jobs, making it difficult for 2020 college graduates entering the new year to find work, and full-time employees either being furlough from work or eventually losing their jobs because of the on and off shutdowns going on.

~ Full-time employees are seeking new jobs that offer better benefits and job security, and some are on that switch to reinvention.

~When something sudden and uncontrollable like this happens, — a pandemic, we are all unsure of the future and the next steps to take. Reinventing and re-branding ourselves just could be that change needed in our life right now.

Accept the situation

We find ourselves uttering the phrase “When will this be over?” That’s a hard question to answer especially without a vaccine and all the uncertainty with it going on. Even with a vaccine, will everything go back to normal? Many questions with little answers right now, but we can stand tall and accept it for what it is and move forward. We can’t skip the pandemic, but once we accept the state of the world, we can prepare to do deeper work moving forward.

Consider what you know about yourself

This is when you dig deep and do that self-talk of “What am I passionate about”. What is that one thing that I really do want to do in life? Knowing strengths and weaknesses about yourself and knowing your limits comes to plan when considering what you can and cannot do.

Improve your skillset

Online classes, webinars, podcasts, etc. There are thousands of resources online for us to use to our advantage. Information, knowledge, and answers are at the tip of our fingers, all we have to do is put in the work. Research, asking people in the field that you want to get into is really vital to what you want to become in the future. It gives you that silhouette of your future.

Be realistic

By this time, after researching and knowing what you can and can’t do, there should be a clearer vision of what you want in life. Be as accurate as you can. Manage assumptions and risks. Set a goal to be reached. Write down specific actions and steps to take to achieve your goals and help yourself to stay organized.

Plan for roadblocks

Thinking miles ahead when switching careers is vital for progress. Bumps and Roadblocks are to be expected when the least you think about it, nothing wrong with being ready and prepared for it. Making and having two, three plans down the line is better than just having one. We all hope that everything goes right the first time but we all know first try is always first fall.

Execute, Make it happen

With everything laid-out and built right in front of you, crossing the bridge is the only thing left to do. Bringing into light what was written in the dark. Action after prayer is the only way to make the dream a reality.

“Ideas are nothing. Execution is the game” - Gary Vaynerchuk

Without a doubt, switching careers is a challenge. But in unusual times, success waits for those who can plan diligently, adapt quickly, think creatively, and manoeuver correctly. When preparation meets opportunity success awaits. Good luck!
