Summary

The web content presents a reflective poem titled "Change," inspired by a quote from William Arthur Ward and dedicated to several individuals, emphasizing the concept of empathy.

Abstract

The poem "Change" is a contemplative piece that uses the metaphor of coins in one's pocket to explore the multifaceted nature of change. It delves into the fleeting moments of the present, the anticipation of the unexpected, the pain of enduring hardships, and the relentless march of time. The author, influenced by Susannah MacKinnie's insight and Ward's quote on optimism and realism, crafts a response that encapsulates the essence of change as a force that shapes our lives, much like the sea shapes history. The poem serves as an expression of empathy towards specific individuals, reminding readers of the importance of connecting with others through shared experiences, as echoed in Mohsin Hamid's words on empathy.

CHANGE in my pocket Nickle and diming What is time worth?

The present fleeting Open each second CHANGE is excitement.

Unwrap the gifts In a moment CHANGE is surprise.

There are minutes That bleed CHANGE is scars.

Watch gears grind Stuck CHANGE is time ticking on.

CHANGE is the sea History sails on Invaluable lives on board.

I wrote this poem in response to Susannah MacKinnie, who wisely noted:

The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails.…… William Arthur Ward
