Challenging Myself as a Writer
My new journey into writing
Writing is a journey where your imagination can fly.
Like the maps above life can take you toward many different directions. A road can have many intersections. One might lead toward a mountain, another toward a lake. A road can have a dead end when you need to turn around and try another road.
Possibilities are limitless.
I love to write. I have been writing poetry since I was in elementary school. My poems were in another language: Hungarian. Now when I write poetry I write them in English. Growing up I would have never imagined writing poetry in another language. Now here we are. I also never imagined that I will publish books as a writer.
Most of my writing except poetry with a few exceptions had been non -fiction. Taken from life and true stories. Translated into paper or the computer screen. Life events, research, facts, interviews and stories from other people.
This month I been challenging myself to write differently.
I wanted to see what I can do if i start to do things in my writing that I have not done before. It all started with an e-mail I received from Vocal Media. I have not been active on Vocal Media for while. This challenge as intriguing. It was outlining a story that had to be written about a dragon and a lost or abandoned child. The line perked my interest. I was thinking about it for a few days then I just stated to write and entered the challenge. I had a friend read the story to see what she thinks. She liked it. I liked it. I hit submit. The story was accepted.
I was surprised how much fun it was to write this fantasy story. I loved every minute of it. I am not sure why I have not tried to write fantasy before.
If you interested I would love if you read my dragon story and let me know what you think.
The next challenge was to create some High-ku poetry. I never wrote this type of poetry before. I was not sure where to start. I looked up a few people who wrote in the challenge and my mind started to flow. I had to figure out the strict syllables 5–7–5 and 3 lines. Than the playing with the words began. I had so much fun that I could not stop myself and kept going. I wrote 6 High-ku poems. I felt very inspired and happy playing with the words and writing in a different style than what I am used to do.
I would love to hear your feedback on my High-ku poems.
Another challenge was to write a story about an aquarium. The story could be from inside the aquarium or from outside looking in. I was thinking about it for a few days. I was not sure how I would like to start the story and where will it go. I had no idea. Than a few words come to me. “It was dark”. the first words I wrote down. Then more and more words and ideas emerged. It seems for me I have to start with something then write more around it.
Once I start the fantasy ideas jumping out from my mind and I can not keep up writing them down. — I enter a true flow state.
I had a lot of fun creating my fish story. I enjoyed the challenge. I would love to hear what you think about my story.
I am planning to continue to challenge myself and create more fantasy writing in addition to my non-fiction writing. there are a few more challenges available on Vocal Media this month and I am hoping that I will be able to continue and create fantasy pieces.
I thought that my road was non-fiction. I will continue to write non-fiction as well and have a few books in the works that are non-fiction.
And maybe after my current book projects I will enter the fiction and fantasy world. Ideas seem to float from my mind into that direction.
There are many roads in writing we can take. I think my path is a mixture of many different type of writing. I like the challenge to create something where I can let my imagination fly and there are no obstacles.
I would love to hear from you.
Tell me what you think and how you been challenging yourself as a writer?
