Challenge Yourself to Develop a Character
31 Day Ninja Writer Challenge 2019: Day Twenty-Five
I’m so excited! This is my favorite little chunk of the Ninja Writer’s Challenge.
Over the next five days we’re going to go through the 5 Ws and the H of developing a story idea by working as a group through the five steps in How to Test and Develop a Story Idea. (Click that link to enroll in the free course, if you want access to all of these steps in one place.)
You remember the 5 Ws and an H from elementary school, right?
Who. What. Where. When. Why. How.
Today we’re focusing on Who. Your main character. The hero of the journey you’re writing.
I’m quite sure that you have a whole cast of heroes running around your head. I would be willing to bet that just when you get settled into writing one story, you can count on another one of them to suddenly demand that you write their story immediately.
I’m right, aren’t I?
Today I want you to do two things, so we can start nailing down who exactly your next story will be about.
One.
Get out your notebook and just start listing those heroes. Just one line descriptions. Think: neglected boy who is invited to wizarding school, girl who is taken by tornado to a magical land, man who jumps into a river to save his guardian angel, married woman who travels back in time and falls in love with another man.
Don’t worry about the details, just make a list of your cast of characters. There is no right or wrong here.
Once you have your list, pick one. I know that might sound like I’m asking you to pick your favorite child! But, you do need to focus on just one off of your list for this assignment.
Two.
Now, turn to a new page in your notebook and start writing about that character. I always start with name, age, and a short description. Then I ask myself questions about this hero.
- What is their ordinary world like?
- What kind of work do they do?
- Who do they love? Who do they hate?
- Who loves and hates them?
- What’s missing in them?
- What’s important to them?
- Who has hurt them?
- Who have they hurt?
- What do they need?
- What do they want?
- Who do they live with?
- Who is their best friend?
- Who is their worst enemy?
- How resistant are they to change?
- What would it take to get them to embark on big change?
- This is a biggie: How are they flawed?
- What makes them heroic?
You don’t have to make a list of these questions and answer them one by one, unless you really want to. I prefer to just free write. If other important questions occur to you as you’re working on this assignment, that’s amazing. Answer them.
Here’s a hero I’m going to use through-out the next five days in the 31 Day Challenge. A female police officer who has an eating disorder.
By the way, I’m leading a four-week summer workshop starting the week of June 10 that’s all about story idea development. You’ll leave it with four lovely new ideas all developed and tested. Want to join me?
