Challenge: Set a Musical Resolution to Explore New-To-You Music in 2024!
I resolve to listen to over 100 new-to-me albums & discover musicians and genres I’m unfamiliar with. What will your musical goal be?

In 2022 and 2023, I participated in a fun challenge to listen to at least 100 new-to-me albums between January 1st and December 31st. It didn’t matter if the albums were brand new or incredibly old. All that mattered was that they were brand new to my ears.
The main reason I wanted to do the challenge was because I thought it would be a fun way to expose myself to music, old and new, that I was completely unfamiliar with. I also wanted to occasionally explore genres I don’t normally listen to, such as jazz, country, and R&B.
Between the two years, I listened to 213 albums I’d never heard before. While I didn’t love all of them, I enjoyed the majority of what I heard.
If you’re curious (and even if you’re not) here are links to my Master Lists of the albums I heard for the first time in 2022 and 2023.
It was all a lot of fun and I’m doing it again in 2024!
Care to join me? I realize 100 albums is a LOT and requires an enormous amount of time, so if you want to choose a different number, that’s fine too.
Maybe one new-to-you album per week?
Or one new-to-you album per month?
Those would also be great ways to do this challenge!
Or maybe 100 albums isn’t quite enough of a goal for you. My friend Bill C is in the midst of a music listening challenge to listen to 1001 albums over 12 months.
If something like that is more up your alley, go for it!
The listening possibilities for this challenge are virtually endless. There are NO RULES here. Do whatever works for you and is fun for you.
Also, there does NOT have to be a numerical goal involved with your challenge. Maybe instead, there are one or two (or more) artists you’d like to explore in 2024.
For example, my friend Kerry Purvis listened to multiple albums by The Bee Gees in 2023 and fell in love with a lot of their music she hadn’t previously known. Kerry now has a goal to delve even deeper into their works in 2024.
She’s inspired me and I’m going to make it a point to ‘deep dive’ into the works of several artists this year. Among them are:
Judas Priest, The Dave Clark Five, Miles Davis, David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, The Rolling Stones, Alicia Keys, Ace Frehley, Bob Dylan, The Modern Jazz Quartet, Pink, and Warrant.
I also want to listen to more movie soundtracks this year — especially instrumental ones.
So, how about YOU? Do you currently have any listening goals for 2024? If so, please let me know.
I’d better go now. I’ve got a lot of music to listen to!
