Summary

The text celebrates an individual as an embodiment of the American Dream, citing their sense of wonder, will to survive, humility, and compassion as key attributes.

Abstract

The passage describes an individual who exemplifies the American Dream through their unique perspective and experiences. They possess a child-like sense of wonder that allows them to see opportunities where others do not, such as starting a venture capital group in a rug store. Their will to survive, born from facing life-threatening conditions, instills a fearlessness that views failure as a minor setback. Despite their immense success, they maintain humility, viewing even modest accommodations as a step up. This humility contrasts with the potential despair and self-medication that might afflict others in similar circumstances. Additionally, their compassion, informed by the suffering witnessed in their home country, drives them to care deeply for startup founders, employees, customers, and the broader goal of improving the world. The text concludes by affirming that individuals like the one described reaffirm the belief that America's true symbol is the Statue of Liberty, representing openness and opportunity, rather than exclusion and limitation.

Opinions

  • Immigrants bring a fresh perspective that can lead to innovative ideas and ventures, which natives might overlook due to established patterns of thought.
  • Surviving harsh conditions fosters a resilience and drive to succeed that can be advantageous in entrepreneurial endeavors.
  • Humility allows for a grounded perspective, enabling one to appreciate and capitalize on even the smallest opportunities for advancement.
  • Compassion born from personal exposure to hardship can translate into a profound empathy for others and a commitment to making a positive impact on society.
  • The true essence of America is its capacity to welcome and provide a platform for success to individuals from all backgrounds, as symbolized by the Statue of Liberty.

You are the American Dream personified and here are a few reasons why (but you’re too humble to mention them):

  1. Your sense of wonder. Immigrants coming here have the child-like gift of seeing this country with an innocence and freshness that natives don’t have. Most of us born here don’t have the ability to get outside of long established ways of thinking to see things in a completely different way. Nobody would have the idea or the guts to open a venture capital group in a rug store.
  2. Your will to survive. Anyone who survives truly life threatening conditions has a will to endure and succeed beyond people who grow up in more comfortable conditions. You are fearless because you know that failing is not a big deal compared to getting blown up or starving.
  3. Your humility (even now inspite of your immense success) gave you the ability to look at anything — even an attic above a yogurt shop — as a step up. Most people here would just be depressed and self medicate to get through their days.
  4. Your compassion. Knowing the suffering of others in your home country gives you the ability to care for the well being of the startup founders, their employees, their customers, and, ultimately, making the world a better place.

People like you validate our belief that the symbol of America is the Statue of Liberty, not a barbed wire fence. Congratulations!
