Cetus

a poem

Photo by Till Rottmann on Unsplash

I was told by the Machiguenga an indigenous group in the Amazon

that the whale is the beginning and the end of the universe

what does that mean? I asked and they just smiled and waited for me to understand

it took a long time over two years til I discovered

Cetus the constellation of the whale of the sea monster one of the largest constellations in our sky

the story goes from ancient Greece that Princess Andromeda was to be sacrificed to the sea monster Cetus because her mother had boasted of her beauty

the princess was chained to a rock for Cetus to devour but she was saved by the hero Perseus

Perseus slay Cetus or turned Cetus to stone and Cetus was placed in the sky amongst the stars a whale made of stars made of light

Perseus and Andromeda fell in love and married

so this myth is about love born from the whale

is it possible this tribe in the Amazon without internet yet rich in myth rich in culture

tapped into this same truth tapped into the cosmos another reality of the whale placed in the sky looking over us shining on us every night reminding us of love
