Celebrating Eid-al-Adha

One of a few occasions when I took a break to celebrate.

On Monday, September 12, 2016, we celebrated Eid-al-Adha.

It is a celebration that goes back centuries. The legend, or the myth, depending on how you see it, goes like this.

Abraham had a dream in which God asked him to sacrifice his most beloved possession. Abraham offered many things, but the dream kept repeating itself. Finally, Abraham decides that his most cherished possession was his one and only son. God accepts Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son by sparing the son’s life.

It is the second of the two major holidays in Islam, known as Eid. The other being the celebration of completing the month of fasting, known as Eid-al-Fitr.

After attending the communal prayers for the occasion and meeting and greeting the members of the community, I returned to spend the day with my son. My daughter and her mother were visiting Canada to celebrate my MIL’s birthday.

We had a grand time playing with the cats and just hanging out together. Later, in the evening, I went to twist balloons at the pizza place.

As I think back and ponder.

When I was a young child, I remember that one of the brothers unwilling to share something with others on the day of the Eid because he had earned it. My dad took the opportunity to teach the spiritual meaning of the “festival of sacrifice.” He said it’s all about sharing your blessings with others. It is not about giving up what you have, but being grateful for it by sharing with those who are less fortunate.

Stay blessed and be happy, my friends.

Just for fun.
