Are You the Reason I Smile When I Check My Medium Notifications?

Finding the time to read all my favorite writers involves some clever juggling skills

Medium notifications

During the workday, I have all my social media notifications muted except for Medium.

Why?

Because I eagerly anticipate a notification that you (the writers I enjoy reading) have published.

I discreetly open up my Medium app to read you hot off the stove.

And a smile lights up my face whenever I see you have left a comment on my post.

I like to imagine my fave writers waking up in the morning, shaking the cobwebs out of their heads as they drain cups of coffee, eager to get to the business of writing.

Do you sit and ponder at the wall, blank screen in front of you as you wait for your muse to fire up, I wonder?

Or are you like me, ideas constantly flashing before my mind’s eye like a kaleidoscope of colors while I tune in and out of the cacophony of sounds that signifies a work meeting in full swing?

Are you thinking of me, I wonder?

Juggling work and writing

According to a survey conducted by Author’s Guild, full-time book authors continue to earn an income that is well below the federal poverty level for a family of 3 which is made even worse if you add in part-time writers: “When part-time writers are factored in the number drops to $6,080, a sharp decline over the last decade that underscores the new reality that writers often must juggle one or more jobs to make ends meet.

While the article goes on to explain how many juggle jobs or have a full-time job to pay the bills, a day job need not need to be a place where creativity goes and dies.

Some have learned to take advantage of writing opportunities that pop up during the work day such as:

  • Zoom meetings (with the camera off, of course)
  • Conference calls
  • Coffee/lunch breaks.
  • During work commute

The same goes for reading your favorite bloggers.

I enjoy doing that and it never fails to spike my curiosity whenever I receive a notification that one of them has published a blog post.

Why?

  • Because some writers feel like kindred spirits
  • Others enthrall me with their lovely prose.
  • A few make me LMFAO which significantly improves my day.
  • I love the inspiration from those who share life lessons and how they overcame challenges in life.
  • Informative posts keep me in the loop.

Can you relate?

I would love to hear about how you make time for writing and reading on Medium during your busy day!
