Caterpillars

a poem

Photo by Patrick Hendry on Unsplash

hiking my hike today I saw one snake and a million and one caterpillars

my friend had just walked this very trail only three days ago

she sat by the river for the day undisturbed

I think all the caterpillars hatched just last night all at once

I’ve never seen so many caterpillars

covering the trail for over a mile creeping and crawling stretching for the sun

I couldn’t take a photo for if I stopped for a second they crawled onto my sneakers and up my leg

caterpillars in the trees sunning on the rocks caterpillars ‘cross a bridge just found one in my socks

swimming in the puddles hanging in the air flicked one off my backpack eew please not in my hair

caterpillars literally everywhere

and now can’t stop musing about caterpillars

and how they are all waiting to discover their destiny

to become a butterfly and to die into another life

good luck little guys I’m rooting for you!
