Abstract

The article "Cat Naps" discusses the energetic and focused nature of cats, debunking the stereotype that they are lazy. While the author was writing, their cat engaged in a series of activities with intense commitment: demanding running water, drinking, playing, eating, hiding, attacking, and even wrestling for the author's pen. The author acknowledges that these interruptions extended the writing process but admires the cat's ability to be fully present in each moment. The article concludes with the author's aspiration to emulate the cat's level of engagement and dedication in their own life.

Cat Naps

100% commitment

Cats have a reputation for being championship nappers.

When not napping, however, they are bundles of energy. This morning, while I wrote two pages in my journal, my cat:

  • jumped into the sink to demand running water
  • drank the water
  • hunted and killed a sock
  • ate breakfast
  • burrowed under a yoga mat
  • jumped onto the bed
  • attacked a string
  • got chased off of the bed (by the other cat, who wanted that string)
  • and wrestled me for my pen

Now, admittedly, it took a little longer than usual to write those pages, what with needing to wrestle my cat for possession of the pen.

But I think the reason cats nap so much is because when they’re awake, they’re 100% committed to whatever they’re doing. They throw their whole selves into it.

I’m going to try to be more like my cat.
